Former BVI Football Association coach, Roger Carter has embarked on a fundraising walk around the four major islands in the BVI to raise funds to assist homeowners who lost their roofs during Hurricane Irma.
Carter, who spent nearly five years in the territory before returning to his homeland in Australia, said when he saw the destruction caused by the hurricane, he devised a plan to do the sponsored walk dubbed ‘Walk the BVI Hurricane Irma Fundraiser’.
Carter and other supporters commenced the walk in Road Town on Tuesday and ended at Trellis Bay on Beef Island.
The walk continued yesterday from East End to Cane Garden Bay, and today from Cane Garden Bay to West End.
The final walk on Tortola will continue from West End to Road Town on Saturday. The walkers will also traverse the island of Jost Van Dyke that day.
They will walk Virgin Gorda on Sunday and Anegada next Tuesday.
“I just finished my third day today,” he told BVI News.
“I am doing a few hours each morning and a couple of my friends have joined me,” said Carter who had not been back to the territory in years.
Proceeds to Adopt-a-Roof programme
Carter said proceeds from the walk will go towards the Adopt-a-Roof programme which was set up by Regis Bourdon of Brandywine Restaurant to assist persons who were uninsured and low on funds to repair their roofs.
The programme is funded by donors who decide whether they want to fund part of, or the entire damaged roof.
Carter said he is hoping the Walk the BVI fundraiser will generate at least $5,000 in donations to the Adopt-a-Roof programme. He said persons have already donated half that amount.
Carter uploads videos and photos of his journey on social media daily, in a bid to generate awareness for potential donors.
He said a number of internationally-based social media users who have seen his uploads have become interested in visiting the territory.
“I wasn’t expecting that but I think that might be a good side effect as well.”
