Former top cop appointed to BVI Red Cross Board
Former Commissioner of Police Michael Matthews is among several persons appointed to the newly installed board of the BVI Red Cross (BVIRC).
BVI Red Cross Director Stacy Lloyd made the disclosure recently while announcing that the new Chairperson of the Board is Rennea Powell.
Matthews left office as Police Commissioner in 2021 after serving for five years as head of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) and has since joined other boards in the community.
The former police commissioner was appointed to the BVIRC alongside Esteban Smith and Theodore John as newcomers voted onto the Board. Secretary Maria Abraham and Treasurer Sylvia Romney-Moses were both re-elected to their positions.
Lloyd said the new appointments were made at the non-profit’s annual general meeting on June 19 and explained that Powell replaces Troy K. Christopher who served as board chairman from 2020.
“I am happy to welcome Ms Powell as our new Chairperson as well as the other new Board members,” said Lloyd while commenting on the new appointments. The Director said the Board reflects the diversity of the volunteer base of the BVI Red Cross.
She added: “I am confident that this new elected Board will continue to propel the organisations from strength to strength in line with our mission of assisting the most vulnerable population during crisis.”
The Board upholds the core ethos and values of the Red Cross. It sets and reviews policies, maintains the organisation’s financial integrity and evaluates its operations and effectiveness. Its role includes safeguarding the long-term reputation and assets of the branch and appointing the director, who is responsible for the operational management of the organisation.
The mission of the British Virgin Islands Red Cross is to mobilise the power of humanity so that individuals and communities can prepare for, deal with and recover from crises. The BVI Red Cross is the oldest non-profit organisation in the territory having been established in 1956.

The man is volunteering his time and people will still find something negative to say. And the funny thing is, the people who will have a problem with his position at the Red Cross, are the same people who will never volunteer their time to help and give back to the community. All the hate because he is white and from the UK.
The integration phase of takeover plan of the colonial masters has started. BVI WAKE UP.
