Former Youth Parliamentarian accused of forgery declares innocence

Kevon ‘Shack’ Lettsome

Following his appearance before the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, former Youth Parliamentarian Kevon ‘Shack’ Lettsome is appealing to the public to allow justice to run its course and not presume that he is guilty.

Lettsome, who says he is innocent, is charged with uttering a forged document, contrary to section 242 of the Criminal Code of 1997.

The offence was allegedly committed on May 27 last year. He was granted $40,000 signed bail yesterday.

“I know the temptation to try matters before the court of public opinion is sometimes easiest, but I trust that the gracious people of these islands will allow this case, if there is one, to be tried before the court where I will prove my innocence,” Lettsome stated in a Facebook post on Friday.

“Though this is an unfortunate experience to endure, the opportunity to clear my name is an advantage that I look forward to, as I have not knowingly uttered and forged any documents,” added Lettsome who is the former Opposition Leader and a Territorial At-Large Representative in the Virgin Islands Youth Parliament.

He continued: “Also, I respect the press’ right to report all matters before any court, but I find the angle taken by Guavaberry Media to be irresponsible and politically driven as they sought to link this unproven matter to the separation of FirstCaribbean International Bank and I, and to cast a shadow on my prospective standing for General Election.”

Guavaberry Media is owned and operated by media personality Cindy Rosan.

I was going to refrain from commenting but I’m sick and tired of people coming on the news claiming they’re innocent when they’re not. This young man has been … for a long time and it’s not just him. He’s in a circle of other young men who … all the time. They know people in high places and when caught, their matters are just swept under the rug like this one eventually. I would love it if the media can uncover this ring of corrupt individuals and expose them for what they are. When I saw that this young man was running for office, was like SMDH. I do hope that justice prevails and the brotherhood doesn’t intervene.

  11. election says:

would your case be settled before elections (by or before May)? If not, please have several seats on the sideline. We don’t need any questionable persons running for a seat in our HoA, especially while the UK, is watching for any mishaps. They already tosses the questionable ones on the side after the COI…now we suppose to introduce them to another? The yellow site will defend because they are the ones prompting you to run but just like the green team doesn’t need to vote CM for chairperson (because UK watching)… we don’t need you at this time.

He seems to have it all down:
    1) spout nonsense to get everyone crazy
    2) steal (started with stealing words – next comes money)
    3) Get caught doing something foolish
    4) Deny everything when caught red handed
    5) Blame this on someone else

  19. @electionn says:

So once the COI says you MAY have done something criminal then automatically without the need to prove it in a court of law the individual is guilty? The COI report where the commissioner and his team had a law passed where they cannot be taken to the court for defamation. Are we that gullible when it comes to the UK that we forget that we are a country of laws that have a judicial system that determines the innocence or guilt of a person. If we do not change our colonial mentality we will end up losing the inheritance of our children. Are we so blind that we can’t see that our country is being taken over or is it that we only we see our Caribbean brothers and sisters as a threat but we can’t see the others?

This article prompted me to read the story on Guavaberry Media. I see clear and straight forward professional journalism. The news site carried the facts. I saw nothing malicious there. Lettsome your comment comes across as your trying to change the narrative. This has nothing to do with the individual or that Media house doing their job.

But I do agree on the premise of allowing the courts to do their job. The public will be watching

    Nothing malicious in reporting facts.
Isn’t it best that we expose corruption in our political landscape. Haven’t we had enough of politicians running free from accountability and responsibility?
I see a few of them really trying, but so many are crooks, some lucky to still be walking free.
If nothing is done then we, the people suffer and pay the price for this mismanagement.
Now is not the time to point fingers at the UK, now is the time to be honest within ourselves and root out the rot within our own.

  33. Tsk tsk says:
