Fraser confident about negotiating new constitution

Fraser

Opposition Member Julian Fraser has expressed confidence that the territory’s leaders will be able to successfully negotiate its new constitution once the time comes.

Fraser argued recently that his re-election campaign was not only centred on change that was badly needed in the territory, but also on the experience he had to offer.

“When I sit here in this Fifth House of Assembly, I see that experience that I was talking about. I see the people of this territory. The people of this territory voted for change. They also voted [for] experience,” Fraser said.

Fraser, a veteran legislator who is now in his seventh four-year term, commented at the time that members of the Opposition have a combined — 68 years of parliamentary experience.

“I look in this House, I talk about the Constitutional Review Commission and the review of our constitution and a new constitution coming on board,” Fraser stated.

“Our constitution is now in the process of being reviewed and in order for it to become a constitution, after the Commissioner prepares his report and submits it to this House for passage, it has to be negotiated.”

The lawmaker said he was pleased to see that there were at least four members in the current HOA that were present in the room and participated in negotiations in the United Kingdom for the 2007 constitutional order.

According to Fraser, Deputy Premier Lorna Smith, Attorney General Dawn Smith, Opposition Leader Ronnie Skelton and himself were all present during the last round of negotiations for the 2007 constitution. Fraser said he held little doubt in his mind that they will all be back based on what he observed.

“I expect very much for us to go back to negotiate this new constitution,” Fraser added. “So, I’m pleased with the results of the votes that the people cast on April 24 and 20… that they listened and they did they did the right thing.”

  6. What's the purpose? says:

Really..what’s the purpose or goal of these repeated constitutional reviews?

With all due respect to Mr. Frasier, in my view these constitutional reviews are a waste of time and effort as the UK still has oversight and remains in control. Its all cosmetic.

IMO, these politicians need to focus on good governance first. They need to demonstrate good leadership that the populace can trust. As it is now many do not have confidence in their abilities.

They need to focus on fixing problems that are in dire need of redress such as: the infrastructure, labor, immigration, increasing crime inclusive of illicit gun in the commission of crime, drug trafficking, education and health care, and better fiscal management.

In other words, they need to focus on getting this country’s house in order, gain the populace trust and support that they can run this country efficiently with minimum corruption.

The goal being that one day they can gain the support and confidence from a majority of people to one day have an amicable and sustainable divorce from the UK.

Meanwhile, stop blowing useless hot air. These constitutional reviews are worn out. Same crap another day.

Agree with you, cause you had to go sit in UK in their house and write constitution with them over your back looking on like a child been taught to write in kindergarten, they watching to see that you don’t erode their authority over their trophy subject they conquered during colonial plundering (the no-word “colonial ” just mean looting, murder and raping”) so no new constitution will do. As much as we mock Haiti, those are real independent countries with constitution.you cannot look at Antigua because they say their and the UK overlooked their constitution frame making certain they swear loyalty to the UK.

  11. 2 Terms says:

If they get the ‘two terms’ passed and people like you are forced to resign/retire, I would be a happy camper. What the hell, other people need a chance to serve as well. Bunch of career politicians. Strupes.
