Fraser: ‘Daggers’ constantly aimed at Premier Wheatley
Deputy Premier Julian Fraser has warned that “many daggers are being hurled” at Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, pointing to what he described as persistent efforts to undermine the leader of government business.
Speaking recently in the House of Assembly, Fraser recalled being approached by Dr Wheatley to help form the current government but said he made his conditions clear.
“I told him straight up, I said, you’re either gonna give me the top job or no job,” Fraser stated, adding that he was “quite comfortable” remaining in opposition after the 2023 general elections.
Despite those initial negotiations, Fraser said he eventually crossed the aisle to support Dr Wheatley after recognising that members of the government “needed help, direction, [and] needed the ability” to prove they could govern effectively.
But the Deputy Premier claimed his decision only gave him a closer look at the challenges facing the administration, particularly the constant criticism of the Premier. “You can see the daggers … every effort to slip the rug from under him,” Fraser told legislators.
He added that while the pressure is intense, he is confident in Dr Wheatley’s resilience.
“I am convinced Mr Premier Natalio Wheatley is smart enough to recognise what is happening. And I’ll stay here and give him the time for him to get out from under what he’s under.”
Fraser’s remarks come as the Wheatley administration faces mounting public scrutiny over governance, financial management, and the lingering fallout of the Commission of Inquiry.
Opposition members have also criticised the government over what they describe as slow economic growth, declining quality of life for residents, deteriorating public infrastructure, and frequent overseas travel by ministers

FRASER TO THE RESCUE
Fraser was once a political enemy, but now he is a cautious ally. However, make no mistake, his dagger sleeps in its scabbard, not because it is dulled, but because the moment to draw has not yet arrived.
I really would like to know if all we can do is attack each other in the HOA? Is this what representative looks like for a country/nation? Back and forth between our representatives? What about the world’s state of economic affairs, climate change, food security, our infrastructure.
