Freak accident at popular food store

Shoppers at the RTW Cash and Carry in Pasea Estate on Tortola were left scampering at the weekend when a motorist reportedly lost control of his vehicle, causing it to climb a flight of stairs that were directly at the entrance of the store.

The vehicle then crashed into bicycles which were being displayed for sale.

BVI News was present at the scene and spoke to the motorist who only identified himself as Nick.

“The vehicle just take off … I was coming from this way (the parking lot), and all of a sudden the vehicle shoot up here and I tried to stop it and I end up here,” he said, seemingly shaken from the incident.

Could have been us affected

One female eyewitnesses who was about to enter the store with her daughter at the time, said she believe they both could have been struck by the runaway vehicle had she not stopped to take additional items from her vehicle.

“I came into this area of Pasea and pulled up behind MMG parking lot and opened my trunk to take out the shopping bags, and I heard a revving sound coming from this direction and when I look, I saw a car coming this way. He tried to slow down the car, the car sped up, hit the banking, hit the plant pot and then flew up there, and that’s where it stopped,” she stated.

He was in shock

She further said she proceeded to assist the motorist after his vehicle came to a stop.

“I saw him in the car and he was shaking. He wasn’t himself at all. He was in shock … And after finish shopping, I asked him if he was ok, and he was like; he don’t know what happened, ” she told our news centre.

BVI News understands that police later took the driver to the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital to have urine and blood tests conducted to determine whether the motorist was driving under the influence of any intoxicating substance.

No one was reported injured in the freak accident.
