Gone again! Premier on 10-day duty travel

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

Just days after returning from the SIDs conference in Antigua, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley left the territory on June 1 with a mission to attend important events in the Cayman Islands and the United States.

The Wheatley administration has received criticism for their frequent international trips but they continue to maintain that international travel provides important representation for the BVI.

On this trip, Premier Wheatley is set to attend the Caribbean Postal Union Conference and an Exploratory Mission in Cayman between June 1 and June 9. He said this event will provide valuable insight into processes that will help to modernise the postal system and also enhance the work of Immigration and Customs.

“The Universal Postal Union International Bureau decided to implement regional cooperation projects to coordinate and improve quality of service through an integrated postal supply chain. This approach aims to help Designated Operators modernise operational processes and use all available IT standardised tools and systems to implement operational solutions, which meet e-commerce requirements,” Premier Wheatley said.

He added: “The exploratory mission regarding the transition of the Department of Immigration and His Majesty Customs to a Border Force Entity will allow for both departments and the parent ministries to gain information on legislative, administrative, and management changes undertaken by the Cayman Islands contributing to the successfully transitioning to the Customs & Border Control.”

After visiting the Cayman Islands, Premier Wheatley will also make a statement at the June substantive session of the Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24) at UN Headquarters where he will reinforce that the UN system must work more closely with Overseas Territories to support development and access to climate financing.

Amid the infrastructure woes in the community, residents have stated that the government should pause international travel and focus on fixing the problems that make life uncomfortable for residents and tourists.

Roughly $3.48 million was spent on travel by Dr Wheatley’s government from 2019 until 2023 — with $1.5 million for travel expenses in 2023 alone.

An amount of $2.8 million is budgeted for travel in 2024 compared to roughly $3.4 million spent over the last five years.

  1. Modernize the post office says:

Residential addresses , donkeys as they cope more easily with the present tracks maybe a literate population. Drones will no doubt be the answer we have a long way to catch up . I’d write a letter to the editor but God alone knows when it would arrive.

  2. Someone give the guy a clue says:

Caribbean Postal Union Conference?!?! Damn dude. Why you making yourself look bad. You’re not supposed to be at this conference. A Premier is supposed to have more important duties. Don’t you have someone in charge of the barely working BVI Post?

I do get it. It’s nice to be able to spend private time with “friends”. Just make it a bit more believable.

The unfortunate thing is that this guy actually things he is creating value by trying to talk to world leaders (who are surely not interested in listening to him).

So based on current prices we could have had 3.48 miles of road over 4 years / $1.5 miles of road last year or 2.8 miles of road this year. Instead weget the Caribbean Postal Union Conference. Allrighty then, nothing to see here.

    The Premier’s getting a roast,
Cos he’s flown off to talk about post
    Bad roads? They can wait
    Notwithstanding their state
When he’s home, perhaps he’ll be toast?

  10. Sad Eyes says:

The BVI does not even have a postal system of any worth. You have to have a postoffice box or collet mail at the post offices. In this day and age people cannot receive mail at their residences. This is shameful. What on earth is he bringing back from these trips?
