Governor: Nationality of next Police Commissioner doesn’t matter

Governor Daniel Pruce

Governor Daniel Pruce has emphasised that the nationality of the next Commissioner of Police for the BVI is inconsequential.

Pruce said his primary concern is appointing a candidate with the requisite skills and experience to address the territory’s evolving criminal landscape.

In a recent interview on JTV, Governor Pruce addressed the ongoing recruitment process for a new police commissioner. He noted that the initial search, launched in May, was halted to reassess the desired qualifications for the role. This decision followed insights from the first volume of a law enforcement review, highlighting areas within the police force requiring significant leadership and transformation.

Addressing concerns about the origin of potential candidates, Governor Pruce clarified, “For me, this has nothing to do with the origin of the successful candidate. What I want to ensure is that we have a candidate that meets our person specification. And frankly, it makes no difference to me where they come from.”

Meanwhile, the Governor indicated that his decision to halt the recruitment process aligns with his commitment to transparency and fairness. He expressed that continuing with the initial process, knowing the specifications had changed, would have been unfair to applicants. He acknowledged the disappointment this may have caused but maintained that redefining the role’s requirements was the correct approach.

We need great leadership

He elaborated on the territory’s evolving challenges, including youth criminality, gun crime, burglaries, and maritime issues. The governor underscored the need for leadership capable of navigating these complexities and driving organisational transformation within the police force.

“We launched the process to recruit the new police commissioner back in May”, the Governor stated. “After that process was launched, we took delivery of the first volume of the law enforcement review. That already illustrated several areas within the police, as well as the other law enforcement agencies, that needed attention, and in particular, needed great leadership.”

Pruce said he anticipates the second volume of the review early next year, expecting it to contain “far-reaching recommendations for the law enforcement community, again, including the police.” Given these forthcoming recommendations, Governor Pruce felt it prudent to pause the recruitment to redefine the candidate profile, ensuring the new commissioner can implement the necessary transformational changes.

Governor Pruce said he aims to restart the recruitment early in the new year, with hopes of appointing the new commissioner by late summer or early autumn. He emphasised the importance of not wasting time, recognising the critical work the police have in maintaining the territory’s safety and security.

The latest development comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force’s leadership. The Governor’s Office recently extended Assistant Commissioner Pamela Trevillion’s tenure by six months despite the Public Service Commission’s initial stance.

Whites have a track record of success wherever they have layed down roots . Any country where they have settled has prospered , South africa , new Zealand , Australia , Hong Kong , US, Israel, Whites have an ability to instill order, organization , planning and execution and they understand the sacrifice for the greater good. This territory needs that kind of leadership . The Governor is smart to not fall for the woke ideology that is now being rejected worldwide. We need competence not cultural comformity

In 2024/2025 and beyond. Law enforcement in the Virgin Islands needs to develop a culture where the corrupt police office or politician, fears the incorruptible police officer or politician and not the other way around. Race and Nationality will play a role in the deciding process for police management in the Virgin Islands. It does not matter how anyone tries to deny or refute this. Words are self-serving.
The police in the Virgin Islands and all other law enforcement entities needs to develop a futuristic culture where personnel act and be seen to be acting within the legal aspects of the law at ALL times, using considered descretions when warranted to do so. It is not perfect, never will be, but a concerted effort is needed to at minimum, to do the Just and right thing when addressing Human rights issues in law enforcement management.
