Governor pleads for help after massive drug haul

Governor Daniel Pruce in front of the vessel that was carrying the 1.8 tonnes of cocaine this week.

Governor Daniel Pruce issued a strong call to action, urging individuals with any knowledge concerning the recent significant drug seizure in the BVI’s territorial waters to come forward.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), in a collaborative effort with the US Customs & Border Protection, confiscated an enormous 1.8 tonnes of cocaine, valued on the street at $180 million. The operation thwarted smugglers’ attempts to transport the narcotics into the area.

The seizure led to the discovery of 60 bundles of cocaine and other items aboard the intercepted boat. Despite the seizure, the culprits managed to escape by abandoning the vessel and escaping in the area around Hodge’s Creek Marina.

Governor Pruce, while lauding the RVIPF and their American partners for the successful operation earlier in the week, remarked on the devastating impact of the narcotics trade.

“The drugs trade is a despicable trade. It destroys lives, it destroys families, it destroys communities. So this seizure is a very, very significant disruption of that trade. It is the largest ever single seizure in BVI waters,” Pruce stated.

Pruce emphasised the ongoing investigation by the RVIPF but highlighted the community’s role in aiding law enforcement. “So I’d ask anyone who may have any information about this incident to please share that with the police. Please get in touch via Crimestoppers. We can all help the police successfully make our territory a safer place.”

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Collins praised the operation as evidence of the RVIPF’s determination to eliminate illegal activities within the region.

The police have urged people to confidentially report any relevant information through the Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477 (TIPS) or internationally at 1-284-800-8477. The RVIPF Intelligence Unit can also be contacted directly at 368-9339.

The RVIPF believes that every bit of information, no matter its perceived significance, could be essential in furthering the current investigation.

Unless our community starts to give up our criminal relatives so that they can face the law, the BVI is doomed. Transporting drugs is not like old-time bootlegging. If the BVI is found not to have robust action against wrong-doers, then our whole financial services industry will be in danger and when that goes, so does 60+% of Government’s income. So, no more government jobs, no more fancy festivals and buildings and (probably) far fewer tourists.

This drugs trade is a real threat to our country’s future. Give up the criminals to save the inheritance of our grandchildren.

It’s every parent’s wish to have their children better off than them. Education is one way up, but hard work and initiative is another. Peddling and transporting things that will bring the world down on us hard is NOT a future for this country. If yu really think that drug smuggling is an acceptable activity for the youth of this country, then you really are seriously stupid.

I recommend this seized drug boat be added to the RBVIP force fleet of border enforcement vessels. While this evidence boat is in custody please store it in an inaccessible enclosed space with 24 hr. armed security.

If they cannot prove that the owner was involved or knew the boat was carrying drugs they will have to give him back his boat. It has happened many times here before but not reported. They cannot keep his boat if he is not proven to be involved. I know of multiple charter companies that got huge payouts from taking Government to court over loss of revenue for keeping their boats impounded with no evidence that they did any wrong. If the owner said the boat was stolen and they have no proof otherwise, they have to give him back his boat or pay a pretty penny. This is perhaps why the Gov/Police are asking for assistance as they know without connecting the dots they can’t keep the boat, just the drugs.

        1) The boat in the photo is NOT a charter boat, water taxi or passenger vessel simply because it is impossible to insure or license this go fast boat to carry passengers.

        2) The boat in the picture was seized by government enforcement authorities in the commission of a crime so the vessel becomes the property of that government at the time of seizure.

        3) Confusing criminal liability with civil liability is the mark of an uneducated amateur.

If there is no wrong why was it ran on land? What if illegal substance was found on the boat? How did such a big boat go missing and no report was made. Certainly these guys check their boats daily and have them well secured.

I know no one who goes and checks on their boar daily here. I know I don’t! I haven’t been down to my boat in 3wks. Not saying the owner didn’t know or wasn’t involved, but that was an unfair comment you made for sure.
