Governor Pruce unaware of unsigned Bills passed by HOA

Governor Daniel Pruce

During a recent press conference, Governor Daniel Pruce addressed concerns about unsigned bills passed by the House of Assembly.
The Governor admitted that he was unaware of any significant delays in approving Bills other than those related to the Commission of Inquiry (COI) recommendations.

When questioned by a reporter about why COI-related bills were signed quickly, while other bills seemed to be delayed, Governor Pruce responded, “If you have examples or information relating to other Acts which you think are with me, not related to the COI, where assent is pending and has been delayed, then do communicate that to me and I’ll look into that.”

The Governor emphasised that his office had worked diligently to process COI-related legislation quickly. He stated that as of last week, three bills, including the Immigration and Nationality Act and the Service Commission Amendment Act, were awaiting his review and signature.

However, two Bills—the Crown Lands Act and the Public Assistance Act—had already been assented to earlier in the week.

Addressing the specific process for reviewing bills, Governor Pruce explained, “My approach to assent since my arrival has been a conscientious one, and assenting to acts as rapidly as possible once my office has completed the necessary diligence and review.”

However, the reporter pressed further, suggesting that non-COI bills were waiting longer for approval than those connected to the inquiry. Governor Pruce maintained that he had not been intentionally delaying any legislation and invited further communication if there were specific examples of bills that had been pending for an unusually long time.

While the COI reforms remain a top priority for the BVI government, the delay in assenting to other bills has raised concerns among the public and members of the media. These concerns stem from the potential impact that delayed legislation could have on the BVI’s governance and public services.

The COI recommendations have been a significant focus in the territory, with the Governor as well as Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley working closely to implement reforms to improve governance and transparency. Governor Pruce and Premier Wheatley are meeting with the UK’s new Overseas Territories Minister, Stephen Doughty, in London this week to discuss progress on the COI recommendations.

  1. CoI says:

The HOA has passed numerous useless legislation since 2019. The tax paying BVI public should be reimbursed by these wasteful politicians by giving $100 from their personal bank accounts to each voter in the BVI for each law not assented. This punishment applies to all elected members and especially the convicted members.

  4. Jane says:

    Mr Governor, its quite simple:

    1. Either you do know, and you’re pretending, in which case you are unfit for office and should resign

    2. You are incompetent because you didn’t get to grips with your portfolio, and are therefore not fit for office and should resign

    3. Your staff have deliberately mis-informed you, in which case those people are corrupt and need to be fired

    4. Your staff are incompetent, are therefore incapable of fulfilling their role, and need to be fired.

Please tell us which one it is and then act accordingly.

These things are a matter of public record and it is simply not acceptable to play the “I didn’t know” card. We are seeking to raise the standard of those in public office and service and this applies to you and the FCO team in Governor’s Office.

  5. Become aware says:

The cannabis licensing act 2020 bill has been unsigned for years. Please for the love of all that is good, assent the bill and let the government fix it. It is four years in limbo.

Cronic pain does not wait, seizures do not wait. We had people die from seizure.

The news beat around the bush with this article. Weed was supposed to be legal years ago now when the police do their search they find coke, crack, bullets and weed in the same areas.

A person with seizures to get medicine has to run a great risk with no quality control.

    – invited further communication if there were specific examples of bills that had been pending for an unusually long time.
