Gov’t announces service commission appointments
The Deputy Governor’s Office has announced several appointments across four key service commissions, filling positions crucial to the effective governance of the Virgin Islands.
In a media release on Thursday, Deputy Governor David Archer Jr. confirmed that Ayanna Hull has been appointed to the Public Service Commission.
The Police Service Commission also saw new appointments, with Preston Stoutt named Chairperson. Christopher Varlack, Vere Browne, Neville Smith, and Kenneth Matthew have been appointed as members. Each will serve a two-year term, except Varlack, who has been appointed for three years.
For the Judicial and Legal Services Commission, Acting Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Mario Michel, was appointed Chairperson following his recent judicial elevation. Justice Gerhard Wallbank, Astra Davies Penn, and Ann Monica Allen Encontre were appointed as members for two years. V. Inez Archibald, who also chairs the Public Service Commission, has joined as a member.
The Teaching Service Commission now comprises Wade Tobin as Chairperson, with Mavis Abednego and Rochelle Smith appointed as members. These appointments are all for a two-year term.
The Deputy Governor’s Office emphasized that these appointments align with constitutional requirements, ensuring that the commissions continue to uphold their critical roles. Service commissions are tasked with providing independent advice on appointments, promotions, and removals within public offices. They are also pivotal in maintaining accountability among public officers.
