Gov’t establishes additional ministry

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

The Virgin Islands Party (VIP)-Lorna Smith administration has established an additional ministry within the government.

This new ministry is titled the Ministry of Climate Change & Environment.

“That stands separately from the Premier’s Office,” said Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley while speaking at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Dr Wheatley said he will serve as the minister of that portfolio.

The Premier noted that the move demonstrates the importance his government has assigned to the environment and all the critical issues involved in its preservation and sustainable use. He further said the move also demonstrates the importance his government has placed on “the existential threat of climate change”.

“I’m looking forward to the ministry’s establishment of a Department of Climate Change and Environment to respond to these needs,” Dr Wheatley stated.

The addition of this new ministry brings the total number of government ministries, including the Premier’s Office, to seven.

BVI environment is our one key selling feature. We need to fund the national parks , ensure our wildlife is sustainable on land and sea and if necessary increase closed periods/sanctuaries. IN addition a very popular facility the QE11 park has been closed for 2 years! When will this be addressed?

  2. rastarite says:

Take care of the dump, incinerator issues and tha toxic smoke problem FIRST. This has been a problem for years. Then garbage collection and recycling – Partner up with GreenVI and install proper recycling bins and collection…

Good job Premier. Keep pushing forward. We have every confidence in you and your team.

  4. Hmmm says:

Be careful Minister of Finance, tightening of our boot straps in these very uncertain times is needed. The Civil Service should be scaled back, not made bigger at this time. Times are hard and our infrastructure is crumbling. We need resources to be concentrated in important areas. Concentrate on those out of the gate.

  5. EpisodeOne says:

Is this Ministry going to clean up he WHOLE of Tortola? Is it going to deal with the disposal of garbage, such as the dumping of furniture, construction waste, etc along the main roads for the tourists to take pictures of.
I am not a 4th district voter but I was hoping for Sandy Underhill to win, because she had a plan to clean up Road Town. The city would be cleaned first and then the districts. Maybe she should give the plan to La*y Luce cause she aint gonna do anything.

  6. Styles. says:

    Fix the dump Natalio.

    Fix the freaking dump.

    Don’t blame covid.

    Don’t blame the contractors.

    Don’t blame any previous governments.

    Just freaking fix it.

    Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

If you haven’t fixed it in two years you are a big failure.
