Gov’t gifts new home to family of deceased woman
Cassandra Sutton was one of the many who applied for a home under the Housing Recovery Assistance Programme after the 2017 hurricanes hit the BVI.
However, unlike many applicants who were able to collect their keys, she recently passed before realising her dream of home ownership.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development recently handed over the keys to Sutton’s daughter, Shantell Chinnery.
Chinnery expressed gratitude to the government, adding that her mother would have been grateful.
“My mom is not here but she would appreciate the house and we will appreciate and cherish the house. So, I would like to thank the Ministry and the Housing Unit,” Chinnery said.
Social Development Minister Vincent Wheatley said this is just another example of the government’s commitment to helping persons return to their homes after hurricanes Irma and Maria.
“We’ve been doing these social homes all over the territory and we intend to continue doing them. I want to thank the contractor, the project manager and the ministry, specifically the Housing Unit, for their unwavering commitment to this project.”
Meanwhile, Third District Representative Julian Fraser gave credit to the Ministry for its ardent support of rehousing people who lost their homes. Fraser also gave credit to Enos Aaron of E&K Contractors for the swift completion of the house and for his continued efforts to help build the Third District.
“Beginning in February of last year, just around 19 months ago, one house was turned over to a family by the government here in the Third and in that time till now, this is the third house that’s been turned over,” Fraser stated. “It just shows that there is a commitment by the government to facilitate the needs of those who need and this is just another one. I am thankful for what took place over the last 19 months to have three families receive keys to their homes.”
Aaron said he is happy to be working with the government in doing social homes. He noted that he hoped the family would take care of the house on behalf of their deceased mother.
Since the beginning of the Housing Recovery Assistance Programme, more than 22 homes have been built and more than 200 homes have been repaired.

Great to see. Too bad the quarter million spent on a concert wasn’t used to provide shelters for those in need. What a waste of money!
Looks like a concrete bunker.
I’m guessing it was a rush job after she became ill, but it’s sad because it’s been SIX years since the hurricane SMH
The dead getting houses but the living cant get.
This is the 3rd house built by the government for this same family on the same plot of land…WOW!
A slew of houses being built in Jost Van Dyke with our tax money. Some of these people own two (2) taxies( sure not paying social, taxes or NHI), gas station, who have ties to the US social security system….While I have to pay a mortgage, taxes, NHI and social. Some of them even give permission to build on their property for the less fortunate so that they can obtain later. Where else in the world this donkey shitz does happen?
Good to see that this house been built in an environmentally sustainable and appropriate way (PV panels, large cistern, grey water recycling, hurricane strength windows). LOLs
The Hermans in Freshwater Pond as well. However, the Herman’s structure was not concrete. But let’s see what will happen the next massive Hurricane, God forbid. Everyone is now adults and a set of hard back men live there!
@ House?
Shut your bad-minded behind. This is a palace. Why can’t you be happy for the recipients? Live and let live and you’ll be a happier person. You sounding real sad right now.
