Gov’t not feeling the pulse of the BVI — Walwyn
Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn has accused the government of being out of step with the needs of the people.
According to Walwyn, lawmakers need to visit communities themselves even though it may be a lot of work.
“It is the way that you feel what is happening in the territory and the difficulties that people are having, especially when you hold a ministerial position. I don’t think enough of that is happening. So you’re not feeling the pulse of the country,” Walwyn stated.
He said elected officials do not understand the difficulties people are facing well enough to make decisions that can improve their lives. “Businesses are having a tough time,” the lawmaker shared, “Many of the businesses, particularly the smaller businesses, are literally on life support… members spoke about the need to get the National Business Bureau going and get it properly funded so that we can assist businesses.”
He said although Deputy Premier and Labour Minister Lorna Smith was doing her best, there was a need for improvement.
“Me and you walked up and down the place [campaigning], and we talked about a number of things,” Walwyn added.
“You left the corner, but it’s still in your heart and you know what needs to happen. I know you could not have been pleased to see the money that was placed in the budget for the Business Bureau.”
He described the government allocation of $125,000 as a menial sum and said half would be used up for administrative work. Walwyn insisted that it was critical to help stabilise businesses now, especially with the coming minimum wage adjustment. He also shared that a minimum wage increase will drive up the cost of doing business.
“The minimum wage needs to increase. We know that. But how are you going to increase that on the businesses that are struggling at this time without stabilising them? You’re going to run businesses into bankruptcy. That is what’s going to happen,” he argued.
“Get the business bureau going. Get some finances going. Give some of them grants,” Walwyn urged. “I know you might be concerned that you give some loans and they don’t pay back. Come up with a strategy. Attach the loans somehow to their trade licenses. Whatever you do, find a way to stabilise the small businesses.”
