Gov’t not opposed to general election

Dr Wheatley

Amid rumours that the Government of National Unity does not support having the general election due next year, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley dispelled that notion during a press conference last Friday.

The Premier hit out at commentators who he described as blatantly spreading falsehood on the airwaves. He dismissed their actions as completely irresponsibly and self-serving.

“Let me take this opportunity to also dispel another falsehood. Recently some persons have publicly stated that the Government of National Unity would not support having a general election when it is constitutionally due. This is absolutely not true,” Dr Wheatley said.

“What we have said is that there will not be an early snap election. There will be a General Election within the constitutionally established period for the election to take place. We of course encourage everyone who is not registered to do so,” the Premier added.

Dr Wheatley noted that the territory must remain united and have a sense of common purpose. He further said the government is steadfast in implementing the recommended Commission of Inquiry reforms in a timely manner so there is no time for partisanship.

This is not the first time Dr Wheatley has expressed concerns about negative reporting by some members of the local media fraternity on the actions of the new Government of National Unity under his leadership.

In late May, the Premier had issued a statement on what he said was a false report by a radio personality that he had issued an $80,000 contract to advance a GIS Public Television programme. At that time, the Premier called on members of the media and the public to be responsible when disseminating information during a time when the Virgin Islands needs to maintain stability. Dr Wheatley reiterated those calls on Friday.

Premier, I believe the real question is more along the lines of – How do you expect to keep the current ‘Unity’ Government operating while the respective party members that make up said ‘Unity Government’ are all out campaigning against each other in order to win May’s election?

I suspect it will be difficult for all involved to effectively Govern when all that make up this current group are saying what needs to be said on the campaign trail, as well as dealing with rival parties/persons also running for political power. Add that to the inevitable rhetoric that will come from all of them and it makes for some unsettling working environments.

Can you imagine sitting down for a Cabinet meeting after the three respective parties that make up Cabinet come back from a weekend of political party events?

So the real question to be posed is – what ya going to do, and how you going to do it?

When you politicians are fighting for power I have yet to see one example where they have put county before their own selfish needs. Let alone effectively Govern a country that has key achievement markers in place that if (supposedly) not completed the constitution is then suspended to the detriment of all the talking heads that are vying for electoral positions.

Considering this context. Do you not think the voting public has a right to be concerned?

I don’t know how the Premier makes it around here, but I think he means well and is rudely treated by a handful of misfits, who is not even fit to run their mouths, nonetheless they must be heard and so they continually spew nonsense. Mr, Premier, take your time and commune daily with God and He will guide you and sustain you.
