Gov’t offers fuel surcharge relief for Christmas

With an expected increase in electricity consumption this festive season, the government has announced a fuel surcharge relief initiative that will directly benefit residential customers of the BVI Electricty Corporation (BVIEC).

The government said it will cover half of the fuel surcharge portion of the electricity bill, providing residents with some extra financial breathing room throughout the month of December 2023.

“As part of its ongoing commitment to alleviate the financial burden on our residents, the government will be covering 50% of fuel surcharge associated with electricity bills from British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation,” an official statement said.

The government said a dedicated fund has been allocated to cover their portion of fuel surcharge throughout the holiday.

Residential customers will automatically have the 50 per cent of the fuel surcharge portion of their BVIEC bill paid by the government and there’s no need to apply separately or submit any additional documentation.

The fuel surcharge relief comes amid cries from residents who have been complaining about the hike in electricity costs and their inability to afford it. The frequent power outages have also added to this problem as some feel they often pay for services from which they aren’t fully benefitting.

Residents at Nanny Cay, and probably other “resorts” and “businesses” do not qualify for the Government handout, which is unfair, but only what we expect from this ra**st government

So they admit this is such a bogus noncritical charge that they are willing to eliminate it from our bills for Christmas. This is ridiculous. What kind of narcissistic Fawkin people are these?

Since govt are alleged not to pay their own bills to BVIEC I wonder how this will work. BVIEC still need the fuel charge income to purchase fuel and operating expenses.

the fuel surcharge relief should be targeted towards low income households. The very wealthy that come on vacation or people with high income can afford it. afterall BVIEC is supposed to be non profit so bill will have to be paid later.
