Gov’t planning meeting with D1 residents to decide way forward

While First District Representative and former Premier, Andrew Fahie is embroiled in a cocaine and money laundering scandal in the United States, residents of his constituency are without significant representation so the government will be looking to engage them in dialogue in the coming weeks.

Speaking to BVI News recently, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley said his new government has been having discussions regarding meetings in the First District to hear the concerns of the people and see how best a partnership can be forged to move forward.

Dr Wheatley said he will then be taking these community meetings to the wider Virgin Islands community.

“I know Honourable Fahie certainly would have had things he was working on in the First District and we are going to work out a system where they do not suffer because he is not there to represent them right now,” Dr Wheatley said.

What First District residents think

BVI News also spoke with some members of the First District to understand the major issues affecting them in their communities.

Based on the responses, it appears infrastructure happens to be a major issue of concern for them. They indicated the roads needed to be in better conditions while certain community-based spaces needed redevelopment and a face-lift.

Additionally, residents expressed concerns about opportunities for the young people in the communities. They also expressed fear that a lack of opportunities for these youngsters’ development may lead them down the wrong path.

Meanwhile, some First District residents expressed their disappointment in the arrest of Fahie, who has been representing them since 1999.

Will Fahie be removed as First District Representative?

Dr Wheatley said he was not aware if Fahie is still receiving a salary as a district representative.

He added that removing Fahie as representative would be up to the Governor. The Premier noted the constitution gives several ways to remove an elected official from their post.

“It is very clear there. Members can resign, also if the members miss three sittings, the member can be removed. There are also some conditions if they are declared insane or something like that, so we must look carefully in the constitution to see the conditions upon which you can be removed as member,” Dr Wheatley said.

Government legislator Carvin Malone was as announced weeks ago as the person who would provide necessary representation for the First District in Fahie’s stead since he (Malone) was the only Territorial At-Large Representative within the new government that was without a portfolio.

As Citizens of this Territory the shock and reality of AF”s circumstances is sad, heartbreaking;embarrassing;unbelievable and disgraceful. Even so, the People needs to move forward and select a new Representative. This doesn’t mean a Person has to feel guilt in removing AF. After all, grief is inedible. Forget the noise makers, do the Right Thing!

As Minister of finance, he doesn`t know if Fahie is being paid.
How do we start a new chapter?

Andrew removed himself from power when he made the decision to be involved in criminal activity. Wheatley had absolutely nothing to do with that.

Thought he was a good man, a man of honor, equality,a peoples man.My family and I trusted and put him there with our X. guess I thought wrong. I have reached to the point where I have lost hope in all governments. For the past 25 yrs of my life. They took the people for a joy ride, lied, steal, treated us like we work for them. no accountability whats so ever. We need proper development and infrastructure for the type of moneys in taxes collected every years. 39 yrs ago we use to catch water in a bucket to bath because street water wasn’t constant, amazingly today people are still going through the same thing. We need help, Let the UK take over and assist us until we can have competent and trusted leaders to run this country efficiently. Premier Sowande, I believe you’re a good person but I thought Andrew Fahie was also. FED UP!

Why is the word “Honorable” being used for Fahie? He is not worthy of that title any longer. Sadly, I just don’t have faith in the formation of this newly formed Unity Government. Everyone, who is a born BVIislander is related in someone’s family tree. The time for change is now. Otherwise, it will be the same story over and over again.

The district is in desperate need, which the Rep knows from long, proper and more advanced learning institutions (Isabella Morris Primary demolished since 2017), the basketball court, water protective wall (only now being looked at), better roads especially Ballast Bay (cruise ship season finished hence priority), beach clean up and installation of bathroom on Smugglars, proper road leading to that beach for residents, will the ferry terminal get underway if so is the cost still the same? Proper Nurse/Medical and Fire Station, better place for Bomba to reside, remodel and restoration of the previous Zion Hill Methodist Church…..and of course a Newly Elected Representative. Thank you

As I said before on another post… please do the peoples work. If Mr. Fahie was the leader of the VIP & the premier and he was removed from those two positions, why should he as an absentee representative be allowed to keep his position??? Does the district rep carry more weight than the other 2 titles? We the residents of D1 should remain in limbo for how long to allow due process??? Did we not vote for 4 at-large candidates? Do they not represent ALL the districts?? Why haven’t the 4 at large reps along with the new premier and the AG and governor come to the 1st district with a copy and of the constitution and review what should happen??? This is no time for emotions and who they like and who are friends, family, inlaw/outlaw. Y’all are like deer frozen in headlights and MIA like how the NDP was after Irma until Gus lit a fire under their baxide. Vanterpool quit before he was sworn in and started another set of confusion. Y’all stop playing games and do aryo wuk!!! I’m sure there is something that would cover an absentee rep and we’ll vote someone in accordingly. And while you’re at it… PLEASE establish a district office, and a community center with a gym and complete the garden road repair and fix the drainage by the SDA church and fix the park by Clem’s by the sea. Let’s see the plans for the Jr high school. All for now

The “blind loyalty” in District 1 is too strong! D1 voters been sold out for 23 years through money and scholarships. It is not like D1 voters did not know what Andrew was up to behind the scenes cause the gossip has been going on for many years since the first case back in early 2000s. Nothing has advanced in D1 for the past 23 years; just look at it! Untidy as f@$k and that is supposed to be a major tourism district with hotels, rental villas and restaurants. West End Seaport????

D1 where is your shame box or even your so-called Christian values? Guess the usual suspects want the gravy train and hand outs to continue despite the facts staring them in the face. SMH!

If the constitution has no provision for removal of a representative in the case of criminal charges, then the COI report is correct in saying (and here I’m paraphrasing) it needs some serious work.

  14. @SMH says:

You obviously know nothing about D1, it’s people, history, culture or values.
I am a proud Virgin Islander. I am hard working. I am honest. I am genuine. I have morals. I have ethics. I have integrity. I am not corrupt. And I am not alone. There are many more like me here in these Virgin Islands.
    Can you say the same??
Because I am a D1 resident and I was raised to have manners and respect I won’t stoop to your level and hurl insults at someone who brings no value to a discussion. You are however invited to have several seats.

Despite your so-called good standing you are being painted with the same brush of shame and embarrassment the the D1 rep has brought on that district and our Territory as a whole.
