Gov’t seeking potential port investors for BVI?

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has confirmed that he and Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer recently met with a potential investor for the BVI’s ports, though he declined to reveal further details about the meeting.

Responding to questions from media owner Cindy Rosan at a press conference on October 3, the territory’s leader said the meeting took place during a brief trip to the United Kingdom some weeks ago.

“Nothing was signed. We met with an investor [who invests] in the ports. I won’t reveal the name of that investor. It’s just not something that I would like to disclose in this particular forum at this particular stage,” the Premier said.

He added that discussions centred on potential investment interest in the territory’s ports, but he did not clarify whether the focus was on the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, which is set for expansion, or any other port of entry across the territory.

As for the cost of the trip, Dr Wheatley said he did not have an exact figure but described it as “a plane ticket to the United Kingdom and one night in a hotel.”

When asked by Rosan whether the meeting was a last-minute decision or a planned engagement, the Premier replied that it was aligned with the government’s tourism strategy and not at the invitation of any investor.

“Nobody invited us. We planned it in line with our strategic objectives as it pertains to tourism,” Dr Wheatley said.

The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts to develop the BVI’s airports and seaports as part of a broader push to strengthen the tourism sector. Industry stakeholders have long argued that inadequate port infrastructure limits the territory’s ability to attract more visitors and fully capitalise on its tourism potential.

We have the right to keep politicians accountable on transparency as to their actions. Refusing to reveal details when you are intending on having them is rediculous.

So a member of the HOA flew to London to meet an ‘investor’ for one night then returned to the BVI. How exactly does this support BVI tourism?

So wait the government spent approximately $15k or more to travel to the UK for 1 night in the name of tourism when they could of make a phone call or do a zoom call and cost you $0. WOW.
