Gov’t signs $105K contract for reconstruction of BFEC

Government has signed a $105,400 contract with development consultants BCQS for the reconstruction of Bregado Flax Educational Centre on Virgin Gorda.

The contract was signed at the Central Administration Complex in Road Town on Wednesday.

Director of Projects in the Ministry of Finance Dr Drexel Glasgow said BCQS will provide construction management services for the rebuilding process, which is slated to be completed in one year.

Premier and Minister of Finance Andrew Fahie said the contract is the first of many his government will sign as the territory moves forward with the recovery process.

“Since we’ve taken office, one of the things that we’ve stressed is to let us speed up most of the recovery projects,” the Premier said.

He also hinted at fast-tracking works to the L-shaped building at the Elmore Stoutt High School campus in Road Town. He said government is aiming to have the building ready by September 3. This, he said, will return some academic normalcy to students who are currently being housed inside the old Clarence Thomas building in Pasea Estate.

In the meantime, Education Minister Dr Natalio Wheatley said all available resources will be channelled towards restoring and developing the education sector.

“We have to understand that recovery involves people and people are really at the centre of what it is we do, so the Honourable Premier has mandated that the recovery in the education sector be of the highest priority,” Dr Wheatley said.

Meanwhile, the reconstruction project is being funded through the $65 million rehabilitation loan government borrowed from the Caribbean Development Bank after the September 2017 hurricanes.
