Gov’t to decide ‘soon’ whether to create junior high school in West End
Government will decide whether to transform Isabella Morris Primary into a junior high school during the course of this new academic year.
Premier Dr D Orlando Smith made the announcement in a media conference on Tuesday, September 4.
“That is a conversation that we have started and we will continue towards a resolution because we have for some time been considering whether to maybe have two or several high schools or whether to have one high school and junior high schools … that decision will be soon coming,” the Premier told journalists.
Nearly a year ago, Education Minister Myron Walwyn had said considerations were being had to have junior high schools on the western, eastern, and central sections of Tortola.
While the Isabella Morris campus would serve as the junior school on the western end, Premier Smith said no schools have been chosen for transformation in the eastern and central areas.
The Isabella Morris school campus has been closed since sustaining severe damage from the hurricanes.
It will be restored or transformed through the $65 million loan government has borrowed from the Caribbean Development Bank.
While government decides whether to transform the school, Premier said the school’s “students are all being satisfactorily housed [elsewhere] so they can all attend school on a regular basis,” the Premier said.

I wanted full day for the schools but damn what about kids from east end to west end, real far.
I guess east end student will attend to east en school and west end student will stay at west!!

Why are we thinking in reverse. We do not need a High School in west End. They just don’t have the Population. WE desperately need a high school in East End where we have over 150 secondary student at any given school term and growing.
Oh Please take a moment and stop wasting money.
I disagree. It makes a lot of sense. With election next year this guarantees the taxi votes as all the students will be bused from roadtown to west end and the ones from east end can be bused to roadtown. Non of them can get home for lunch so that gets the food venders votes as well .Pure genius.
Is this proposal this late into government tenure, a political gimmick or is it part of a national educational development platform. If so, have key stakeholders been given the oppprtunity to engage in the discussion. Is part of the national development plan? Education is a key driver to economic growth and development and its development cannot and should not be done in a vacuum. The community needs to be fully engaged. No Hail Mary action(s) (11th hour NFL play) for mere political purposes should be used on such a critical and vital function.
The smaller the student population the easier it is to manage. The better would be the all round results.(at an administrative and academic level) If there are three schools to educate the students that would be better. Why does everything have to be about politics. Volunteers were asked to help clean up the ESHS campus and get the CTL Building ready to get the children off the streets. Some of you who criticizing how many of you showed up . Some people are so self sacrificing and helpful towards the progress of the country we love so much!! It is mind boggling
First thing first what about the reopening of school for Cane Garden Bay , Cappons Bay and Carrot Bay children? are they going back under the TENT? common please please the Children and teachers cannot take another day under a tent. Papa God please send help.
Which students being satisfactorily housed? Not the Ivan Dawson, not the Isabella Morris nor the Leonora Delville Primary School ! All 3 schools are consolidated under tents in Capoons Bay. I’m sure that’s the same tents children going to use for the new school year this September – 1 year since Irma. But hey…. Who cares ???
