Gov’t to introduce lunchtime entertainment in the park

The government has plans to introduce lunchtime entertainment in the park as a cultural initiative this year.

Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture Luce Hodge-Smith recently announced the initiative, expressing a vision for a more vibrant and engaging community space. This programme is expected to enhance the midday experience for residents and visitors by offering live performances during lunch hours.

“One of the things I am definitely going to be working on for next year is… to have entertainment during lunchtime in the park,” Hodge-Smith said. The goal is to provide an opportunity for individuals to get out of the office during your lunch hour and have entertainment… and just relax.”

The junior minister explained that the concept draws inspiration from other successful programmes.

“It’s not an original idea of mine. I saw it somewhere, but I thought it would be something nice for people,” she noted. This initiative is part of a broader effort to revitalise Road Town and enhance the quality of life in the BVI. Plans include creating more pedestrian-friendly walkways, improving visitor amenities, and developing green spaces. Hodge-Smith emphasised the importance of community involvement.

“We want to get the private sector and even the community… to be a part of this change,” she expressed.

Additional projects

In the meantime, Hodge-Smith indicated that additional projects are already in motion to transform the area into a more vibrant and welcoming space. One key project includes the long-awaited boardwalk extending from the Pier Park to the Queen Elizabeth Park.

“The boardwalk that has been talked about for many, many years… that’s going to get started very soon,” she said. Another initiative involves constructing a walkway between First Caribbean Bank and Vanterpool’s Pharmacy, creating a new area for vendors and relaxing spaces for the public.

“We’re going to create that space where a few vendors can come, get them off of the main street… and make it an entertainment kind of thing in the evening,” Hodge-Smith explained. Additionally, the Junior Minister noted plans to involve the private sector in beautifying the capital.

“We’re not reinventing the wheel… these are projects that have been sitting on the shelves,” she said.

Hodge-Smith also reflected on the importance of celebrating the BVI’s cultural traditions, emphasising the need to revive community spirit.

Initiatives such as bringing back Fungi music in schools, supporting steel pan programmes, and promoting local food and art are also on the agenda for 2025.

This is pure stupidness. I entertain myself by taking my lunch hour to go and pay my bills, have peace and quiet and eat lunch. Time to set Luce loose. The money you’ll take to pay the band just give it to me to pay some bills. Really donkeys all you who make this rubbish get in the news.

Is a 30 minute lunch break legal? If so, is it because there are no unions in the BVI? In the “down islands” a lunch hour is a lunch hour – 60 minutes.

        • @@Geronimo says:

Of course is 30 minute lunch break is illegal. Then you have some that takes 2 and 3 hour lunch breaks. This place is in for one rude awakening very soon.

i dont want lunch time entertainment. i want a parking complex in town to improve the parking in the Road Town. instead, we have cars park any and everywhere looking like a 3rd world country. instead you get private parking for government workers and paid parking by people who buy one small plot of land

  12. Blended says:

Save money and install a sound system. You do not need to hire live entertainment which will not always be available anyway…have music on WIFI and let it play all day..why just lunch time. think outside not in the box..next you will say you have no money to cut the grass, put toilet paper in the restrooms or even cover the benches so you can eat under covered shade (rolls eyes)

  13. Do Something Real says:

How about filling up enough land space opposite Pussers to construct a multistory parking lot that would serve the ferry dock, the adjacent business community and motorists in general. Do something that is going to make a real difference. You need an action committee to brainstorm and bring ideas into fruition then you need to be dynamic enough in HOA to have your ideas acted upon. Any elected rep. can perform you just need the right connection with the public and business community.
