Gov’t working feverishly to get Prospect Reef up
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley said his government is working feverishly to get the Prospect Reef Board activated before year’s end.
“The redevelopment of Prospect Reef is of the highest priority. We are working feverishly to constitute the new board by the end of this year and to issue the Request for Proposals for a new resort facility at Prospect Reef early in 2024,” Premier Wheatley said in his budget speech.
The previous Prospect Reef Board expired in June, but he previously suggested that there have been some challenges experienced in reconstituting a new Board. The Premier noted at the time that there were also some legal issues, which the previous Board tried to address at the time.
Premier Wheatley previously blamed the absence of a Board as being the main reason for the state of neglect at the Prospect Reef Hotel area. “Prospect Reef is a company. I believe the company was struck off and needed to be brought back into good standing. So the Boards which were there were focused on that,” the Premier said.
He added: “The property would really be the responsibility of the board and in terms of the property, very soon you’re going to see the whole property scraped — every inch of the property scraped — and that should assist with the state of the property.
Meanwhile, the Premier announced several tourism initiatives by his government and explained that some tourism investment projects have already been approved by the Planning Authority. “Major hotels and resorts, such as at Nanny Cay, Peter Island, Long Bay, Bitter End and Eustatia Island, have either commenced large-scale expansion work in 2023 or will start in 2024,” Premier Wheatley stated in his budget speech.
He further noted that other major development works were planned at Blunder Bay for which a $38 million master plan was already approved.
In addition, approval was provided for a Wellness Resort and Spa development on Jost Van Dyke in 2023. Premier Wheatley also noted that the development of villas continues at Oil Nut Bay Resort and stated that development on Norman Island is progressing well.

I get the impression that once demolished that site will be set aside for some other purpose other than a new hotel / resort. Please don’t let it become another dumping ground for fly tippers and another unofficial boatyard for the cigarette boats!
Most of the developments listed involve foreign capital, ownership and control, without which they would not have proceeded. The BVI Government is not friendly to foreign investment, as identified by independent surveys and reports. And to say that Government is “feverishly” working on plans for Prospect Reef is a joke – it has been 7 years so far….
working feverishly you say?
Dismantle this non-functioning board, sell Prospect Reef and step aside.
Thats all Prospect Reef needs. All it has ever needed.
Am I correct in the saying that the BVI Investment Club is a major shareholder in Prospect Reef?
Given that it’s been decades since anything has happened ar Prospect Reef plus rhe absence of any visible progress, ome would think that the appropriate adverbs to describe the govt work there would be excrutiatingly slowly, glaciallly, or even imaginary. In fact, is there anything at all that any BVI administration has done “feverishly”?
That is a great description of this government. They seem to be having a hot flash every few moments.
So what’s up with the government trying to run construction and hospitality companies?? These guys have trouble fixing roads and water pipes!
This Blunder Bay stuff is something that we should pay a bit more attention to. When it comes out of left field in the middle of a discussion of Prospect Reef – it becomes just another CoI investigation that we are going to hear a lot more about 10 years from now!
the drop in when Marcie work there..good old days
is the reality of Prospect Reef. Please just let nature take over the ruins of this resort. Another 20 years and the mangrove forest will cover the area to hide the struck off developers failure.
