Gov’t working with BVIEC to lay more resilient lines

Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer said his Ministry is working along with the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) to help prepare the territory’s roadways to be more resilient in instances of bad weather.

Rymer told the House of Assembly that a contract was recently signed for the reconstruction of 3,800 feet of road from Paraquita Bay to Hodge’s Creek.

The Minister said the road is expected to include slipper drains, culverts and box drains, along with a new subbase and base layer.

According to Rymer, the government is also working along with the BVIEC to lay conduits for main transmission lines for resiliency within the electrical distribution system.

He said the long-expected construction work represents phase 1 of the remedial works to be performed in this area.

The Works Minister further shared that the government is hopeful that phase 2 of the work, which will commence from Hodge’s Creek to Fat Hog’s Bay, will be put out to tender by December of this year.

“We were always resolved to do comprehensive road reconstruction works following the completion of the sewerage projects in specific areas,” Rymer stated. “We will shortly be concluding sewerage works in the Fat Hog’s Bay and Long Swamp area, thereafter, road reconstruction will follow.”

  1. Just says:

lay submarine electric cables in flood prone areas on land; e.g. under Paraquita Bay highway.

  2. Indigenous BVIslander says:

Don’t lay tarmac onto dirt – it has to go onto reinforced concrete or it will just wash away in the rain. Better still, don’t lay any tarmac and leave the roads as concrete – yes it is nosier and harder on tires, but is lasts!!1

  3. What? says:

Hodges Creek to Fat Hog’s Bay? That’s a mile?

  4. Good says:

Thanks to the ndp government for the foresight and plans. The only thing you did was that economic zone but go see it. .
