Gov’t workshop targets office gender sensitivity
The government held a training workshop last week aimed at promoting gender awareness in the workplace. The workshop targeted gender focal points within government agencies and statutory bodies.
The training, titled ‘Building Gender Awareness in the Workplace: A Participatory Workshop’, was led by Gender Affairs Coordinator Patricia Hackett from the Office of Gender Affairs. The government said the initiative aligns with its broader goal of eliminating gender-based discrimination.
The workshop focused on introducing basic concepts in gender awareness, increasing understanding of gender sensitivity, and identifying how gender issues manifest in media, music, and advertising. These concepts reportedly play a role in shaping societal culture.
Hackett emphasised that building gender awareness is crucial for fostering equality, respect, and inclusivity within the workplace.
She also shared that raising awareness about gender-related issues, such as sexual harassment, and addressing challenges faced by some employees, creates a more equitable working environment.
“Promoting gender awareness helps to combat stereotypes, biases, and discrimination, leading to fairer hiring practices, equal opportunities for advancement, and ultimately, greater employee satisfaction and retention,” Hackett added.
The facilitator said organisations that prioritise gender awareness demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility and contribute to broader efforts which can create a more just and equitable society.
Meanwhile, Acting Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development Sheniah Armstrong Jones said the workshop aligns with the government’s commitment to international agreements and initiatives promoting gender equality.
Armstrong said eliminating gender inequalities and discrimination against women, men and children is one of the government’s top priorities.
