The Ministry of Health and Social Development has announced the launch of the BVI Moves programme to commemorate Caribbean Wellness Day on Saturday, September 14, under the theme, “Power Through Collective Action.”

The programme will kick off with a run or walk starting at the Ralph T. O’Neal Administration Complex at 6:00 a.m. Participants will follow Admin Drive onto Dual Carriage Way, proceeding to ZBVI in Baugher’s Bay and then returning to the complex.

The Health Minister expressed enthusiasm about the launch, noting it was designed to improve the health and well-being of the Virgin Islands community.

“The initiative was born out of the remarkable success of Caribbean Moves in other countries and our experience from the successful BVI Run/Walk Program from 2015,” the minister said. He added, “The BVI Moves programme will be implemented using a three-pronged approach by establishing partnerships with communities, schools and workplaces.”

Wheatley also called for public support to ensure the programme’s success.

“Our mission is clear, but we cannot achieve it alone. We need the support of every individual, family, and community member across the BVI. We want to especially invite our private sector partners to join us and our community walking warriors to set an example as we revitalise movement in our community,” he said.

He continued, “BVI Let’s Move Together, towards a healthier Virgin Islands. Together, we can create an environment that fosters healthy habits and ensures a brighter, healthier future for all.”

The BVI Moves programme aims to promote regular physical activity, encourage healthy eating as a foundation for good health, and raise awareness to reduce non-communicable disease risk factors.

Caribbean Wellness Day was initiated in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, in September 2007 as a response to the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases.
