He’s OK! McMaster falls in Diamond League Meet ahead of Olympics

Kyron McMaster after falling while competing in Sweden on Sunday, July 4.

President of the BVI Athletics Association (BVIAA), Steve Augustine has confirmed that Kyron McMaster emerged injury-free from a fall he sustained while competing at the Wanda Diamond League Meet in Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday.

McMaster had a strong start in that race and quickly ran ahead of the pack to hold the lead right up the third-from-last hurdle where he stumbled.

He managed to recover but not before conceding his lead to Brazil’s Alison dos Santos who eventually won the race.

Continuing the race in second position, McMaster sped to the penultimate hurdle and successfully leapt over it. But as he attempted to jump the final hurdle, McMaster tripped, causing him to accidentally somersault before crashing to the track.

He did not finish the race.

President Augustine allayed any fears of injury while responding to an inquiry from our news centre.

He said: “Following the race, I had a brief conversation with Kyron where I was able to verify that he is OK and looking forward to competing again in Monaco on the 9th.”

This incident follows recent news that the BVI’s national Shot Put champion and Olympian, Eldred Henry would not be competing at the Olympic Games because of an injury in his right elbow.

Henry was scheduled to represent the BVI at the Olympics alongside McMaster and female Long Jumper Chantel Malone.

The Olympics will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021.

McMaster is currently the fourth fastest man in his discipline this year, with a season’s best time of 47.50s. He is only one of five men to run under 48 seconds in the event for 2021.
