History will remember VIP administration kindly, says Premier
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley said he believes history will remember the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) administration favourably for its leadership during a time of significant national challenge.
Speaking in the House of Assembly last week, Dr Wheatley reflected on the government’s response to the Commission of Inquiry (COI) recommendations and emphasised the importance of unity in the face of external pressures.
“I believe history will remember the work of the unity government and this administration kindly,” he said.
In the wake of the COI report, the VIP-led government formed a unity administration, incorporating members from opposition parties, to address the recommendations while preserving local autonomy. Premier Wheatley emphasised the importance of this collaborative approach.
“We were faced with the threat of suspension of our constitution and we didn’t just accept recommendations of the report,” he stated. “We came up with a framework document and the government articulated its position.”
He explained that the administration had gone through a process of reviewing and accepting or rejecting specific recommendations. “Quite a lot of the recommendations in the COI report called for reviews. They didn’t call for us to take specific actions beyond that,” he noted.
According to Dr Wheatley, the government appointed local reviewers such as Anthea Smith, Jamal Smith, Denniston Fraser, and Kedrick Malone to evaluate the recommendations. “Our people did reviews,” he said. “In the Cabinet of the Virgin Islands, we went through a process where we decided which recommendations we accepted and which recommendations we rejected.”
Dr Wheatley pointed out that the reforms were carried out democratically. “We brought the legislation to this House and every member had the opportunity to contribute to the final product,” he said. “We were able to implement reform under a democratic framework.”
The Premier also called for a similar united stance on the recent law enforcement review, encouraging members to formally communicate their rejections of certain recommendations to the Governor and UK authorities.
“Based on the type of unity that has been displayed in the House, I believe it would be appropriate for a letter to be drafted and signed by all members of the House,” he suggested. “We reject the implementation of a number of these recommendations.”
Premier Wheatley also stressed the importance of preserving the territory’s legacy. “We must ensure that we continue along the journey of self-determination,” he said. “This is the legacy of our ancestors that has been bequeathed to us, and we have a responsibility to continue the journey.”
Dr Wheatley’s comments come as the territory continues to navigate post-COI reforms. The Premier has consistently voiced concerns about any potential redefinition of internal security powers and the imposition of recommendations that could override local legislative authority.

Now I am convinced that something is wrong with this man.
Lest you forget that it was the VIP administration that caused the COI. Lest you forget that it was the VIP administration that accepted the recommendations. Lest you forget that all the mess we have now because of the COO is because of the VIP administration. Which world are you living in Sir?
Vision Integrity Progress
