HM Prison advances COI compliance training
His Majesty’s (HM) Prison has reached a significant milestone in staff development, having completed more than 1,300 learning hours since the beginning of the year.
This achievement was celebrated at a recent ‘Reward and Recognition Service’, which highlighted the institution’s commitment to meeting the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) Justice Review.
Tasha Bertie, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, addressed the importance of these training programmes at the event, praising Prison Superintendent Jay Kendall for his role in the achievement.
“Superintendent Kendall and our ministry have worked in collaboration to offer a number of training and development opportunities, aligning with the government’s mission to provide guided learning hours to each public officer,” Bertie said. “I was pleased to see the prison’s ‘You Said, We Did’ initiative, whereby they communicated a number of important achievements following feedback received back in November 2023.”
Meanwhile, Kendall expressed pride in his team’s dedication to self-improvement and skill development.
“We are on a mission of change and improvement, working hard to change the narrative surrounding the prison into a positive one of teamwork, professionalism, public service, and rehabilitation. The objectives we have achieved so far provide a head-start on addressing the COI Justice Review Inspection recommendations, which is a positive development,” he stated.
The training covered key areas such as Officer Safety, First Aid, Prison Officer Entry Level Training, and Supervisory Management Training, reflecting a broad effort to enhance the capabilities of prison staff.
The ceremony also recognised individual accomplishments within the prison service. Notably, a Principal Officer was honoured upon retiring after 38 years of dedicated service. Evetha Simmons-Ogunsakin was celebrated for her recent promotion to Principal Prison Officer, marking a significant milestone as the first woman to hold this managerial grade on a permanent basis at HM Prison Balsam Ghut.
