Hospital grabs historic accreditation | First in Caribbean

The Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital in Road Town

Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA), Dr June Samuel has revealed that the Dr D Orlando Smith hospital has been granted full accreditation from the esteemed accrediting body DNV-GL (Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd).

The hospital now stands as the first Caribbean institution to be recognized by DNV-GL, which boasts an accreditation list that includes over 635 US hospitals and 15 others spanning Brazil, China, Iceland, Slovenia, Czech Republic, and Thailand.

The achievement follows the initial accreditation in 2020 which necessitated follow-up evaluations by DNV-GL. Following the final successful assessment, the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital is now the proud recipient of a comprehensive three-year accreditation certificate.

According to BVIHSA officials, choosing the DNV-GL programme was in alignment with BVIHSA’s unwavering dedication to patient safety and quality. Renowned for their methodical developmental approach, DNV-GL ensures organisations such as the BVIHSA embark on a journey of continuous growth and alignment with global standards and best practices.

Before awarding the accreditation, seasoned healthcare experts gauged the BVIHSA’s proficiency in ensuring a secure environment for patient care; enlightening patients about diagnostic and treatment risks and options; upholding patient rights, including privacy; assessing patient conditions throughout treatment phases; safeguarding patients and staff from infections; and preparing comprehensively for potential emergencies.

The acclaimed DNV-GL accreditation integrates NIAHO standards with ISO 9001 and ISO 15189 standards for healthcare and medical laboratories, respectively.

The BVIHSA said it is committed to upholding high standards and welcomes regular monitoring and inspections that come along with accreditation.

Congratulation BVI. At least they can say the BVI government through their health team and leaders can be credited with accomplishing great things. All the past and present nurses, doctors, hospital administrators, Chief Medical Officers, PS, Health staff, Ministers of Health, Premiers (especially Fahie and Malone who saw it fit to give most of the expat nurses status and brought in the Cuban medical team during covid in a crucial time of need as well as ensured the finances to get the accreditation accomplished and funded many locals to study nursing and become doctors). THE BVI SHOULD BE PROUD

The only thing left for the hospital to do is pay the people for the work that they outsourced. I’ve been waiting since 2019 for the money that they owed me for work. Talking bout the money is
    Too much

BVIslander sare never giving credit w. What about the Cuban Doctors who cant speak the language. Some of them do work hard. You all are always on here bashing NVIslanders

  12. Facts says:

Facts and bashing are two different things
Expatriate work like horses and never given credit for their work .
When it is volunteer work and extra hours without pay it is expatriates
When it is recognition and money it is BVIslanders
You cannot have a handful of SOME inexperienced, not as educated and knowledgeable BVIslanders control
Highly experienced, and knowledgeable expatriates and this is where all the problems begins
Nobody come here to take away anything but when statements are made like “SUPPORT Your OWN “ it kills the society
Take the best not this support your own mentality

It is the little holes that sink a ship

Some of the worst attitude and lack of humanity is shown by some of those same expatriates you are referencing. They might have the skills and expertise, but they don’t have no positive manner in dealing with patients and hospital workers. They definitely don’t need to be employed in any health care environment.

  14. When !! says:

When is the government going to resolve this issue and give the Expatriates Nurses and other healthcare workers who have been here for donkey years, a pension. The AG and government have been considering this issue for over two years now. IT is inhumane to have these people work for twenty to thirty years and then tell them you cannot give them a pension because they are not from here. The sad story is that many of them are now Belongers and voted too but they are still being denied a pension.
