Hospital makes urgent appeal for blood

The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) is appealing for residents to donate blood to the laboratory at the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital.

The health authority made a special appeal to past donors and assured that persons of all blood types are welcome to donate as the current supply at the hospital is low. The authority also said the blood is needed to ensure vital products are readily available for patients.

In the past, the BVIHsA has stated that pregnant women are among their main patients who require blood.

In general, hospitals require blood to perform life-saving procedures especially on those who need surgeries. Persons are asked to donate because humans are the only source of the life-saving fluid, which cannot be manufactured outside the body.

Persons who would like to give blood to the local laboratory are asked to eat a full meal at least two hours before donating.

They may also contact the laboratory at (284) 852 7500 ext: 7571/757 or visit any time between 7 am to 4 pm.

Would be good to have persons volunteering but if that is not happening, maybe we should look at providing some incentives.

Plus when you give blood down there not even a lil orange juice to drink after, just wait a few mins then leave, well sah.
