House of Assembly to meet remotely due to COVID-19 threat
In light of the ongoing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the House of Assembly will now be meeting remotely, as necessary.
The motion to have remote meetings was moved during a special sitting of the House last Friday, March 27.
Outlining the motion to legislators, Premier Andrew Fahie said: “Where it is impracticable by reason of any emergency for the House of Assembly to meet physically, the House may do so by electronic means.”
The Premier further expressed gratitude to Opposition Leader, Marlon Penn for supporting the motion.
“I want to thank the Leader of the Opposition for agreeing with the government to meet only in emergencies through electronic means. That is very important so that the work of the people can continue,” he said.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the House Julian Willock said the Premier’s motion will help to modernise the House of Assembly.
He believes it paves the way for the use of advanced technology in future meetings.
