I am very concerned about the number of gun crimes

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

Amid four murders in the community since the start of 2023, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley said he shares the community’s sentiment and remains concerned about the number of gun crimes that have been rocking the territory.

In addition to firearm-related murders, persons have been victims of non-fatal shootings since the start of the year.

“As the elected leader of our territory, I too am very concerned about the number of gun-related crimes and more so the gunning down of our young males, who leave behind their parents, children and partners. We will never know their great potential to have made significant contributions to our ongoing development. I extend condolences to the families of both victims of crime this past weekend,” Premier Wheatley told BVI News.

There is no indication the police are making progress with gaining information that can assist them in solving the crimes in the community.

But, Premier Wheatley said the National Security Council is hastily looking at strategies to combat gun violence. He also said the government will allocate the resources necessary to tackle increasing crime.

“My administration takes this very seriously and remains committed to making available the necessary resources to combat and tackle increasing crime. The National Security Council, of which I and the Commissioner of Police are a part, is aggressively looking into strategies and a framework to tackle gun violence. We recognise the urgency and are taking steps to address this with as much haste as possible,” Premier Wheatley stated.

As the community continues to grapple with the shootings, some have been questioning whether economic hardships are pushing youth into a life of crime.

BVI News asked the Premier whether he agrees with this statement but he said he has no evidence to support this belief.

“Regarding the correlation between these crimes and the impact of economic hardships, I do not have the data to support this and therefore do not want to conclude otherwise. Crimes such as these do not only affect the victims’ family but our entire territory,” Dr Wheatley explained.

He continued: “That is why the governor and I – in our last joint statement – encouraged persons to call the confidential hotline to share any information or tips to assist with ongoing police investigations. I want us all to do our part. It’s a partnership and, again, my administration will do whatever it can to tackle crime.”

The police are yet to reveal to the community whether they’ve established the motives of the four murders and other shooting incidents that have happened in the community in recent times.

Natalio, you are part of the problem:

    1. You supported Fahie as his lapdog when we all already knew Fahie was allegedly a crook.
    2. You still give him praise for his “accomplishments” (frenchmens cay bridge for instance).

If you don’t want guns in the territory, don’t support drug lords.

Try to maintain the population at the current level. Too much ‘development’ can come with too many societal ills that you won’t be able to fix.

  15. Waste of Time says:

Too much talk and no action from the authorities. Every time there is a shooting, there is always a statement about the meeting of the security council. Where is your plan??? How much worse is this going to get before we make a real effort to tackle it? At this point, the security council is a blatant waste of time. Additionally, Fahie has proven that crooks sit on the security as well as he sat in the meetings for about 3 years. No wonder it is so hard to trust authorities.

    Psalm 10:15
    New King James Version
    15 Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man;
Seek out his wickedness until You find none.

Herein lies a command and a promise, do you have the testicular fortitude to put God’s word first or is it just emotions talking?

Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
    Eccles 8:11 NKJV
