‘I don’t expect to get Commissioner post in a hand basket’
Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline Vanterpool says she expects to go through the full process for the advertised Commissioner of Police post and does not anticipate any preferential bias in the appointment.
Vanterpool was adamant that she did not expect to get the Commissioner’s post in a hand basket.
“I don’t, because it has been advertised. I have applied. And there are other applicants that have also applied, I don’t know how many,” she told the Talking Points show. Vanterpool, who has been serving in the role since October 2024 after the departure of Mark Collins, confirmed she is prepared for the interview process.
“I am expected to go through the process. The next stage is the interview process, which I’m looking forward to. And expect to go and deliver,” she stated.
She emphasised that her qualifications and years of preparation make her ready for the permanent appointment.
“In terms of my qualifications, I fit all the criteria that was asked for, qualifications, because I prepared myself academically over the years. And if you listen to my story, I always wanted to be a cop. So I prepared myself over the years to develop myself academically, to go back to school, go back to college, because I knew I had a goal … to be the first female commissioner of police. And that is still my goal,” she said.
Vanterpool also highlighted the progress achieved under her tenure despite challenges.
“From October last year to present, how I will rate myself, I feel proud and honoured for what has been accomplished under my watch, along with the team that I had below me,” she noted.
She pointed to one of the force’s most significant achievements earlier this year, saying, “We retrieved over 10 firearms, over 900 and something ammunition, over 1,400 and something kilos of cocaine.”
The Police Service Commission is responsible for the interviews and final recommendations, while the Governor makes the appointment. The vacancy was re-advertised in April following the release of the second volume of the law enforcement review, with applications closing on 30 May.
The Governor has said the appointment must ensure a “suitable, trained and qualified candidate” is selected to lead the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force. Despite speculation that a local candidate may face hurdles, Vanterpool expressed confidence in her readiness.
“If you’re talking about qualifications and experience and skills, yours truly has it. My tenure from October to now, it speaks volumes,” she stated. The decision on the new Commissioner is expected later this summer.

This Police Commissioners strategy on crime is to pray hard which is a little worrying with all the craziness going on around this small place.
If that’s an exact quote of how she speaks in the article, that’s concerning.
Jackie Vanterpool should get the job or else we would never hear the end of it. The moaning and crying for the post of COP will never stop for her.
Keep yourself above the fray. The cop job is to administrate. You know the force and its culture. No ego but manage. I think what people feared most is you will be more aggressive in maintaining law and order. Not those who come here on vacation get drunk and crash vehicles. Gov. Set history and you have the authority, if she does a bad job just remove her. You are the Governor. It is not hard.
