I only raise issues to help improve the territory

Opposition Leader Myron Walwyn says his often pointed interventions in the House of Assembly are driven by a single objective – national improvement – insisting that his questions are not meant to embarrass the government or target individuals.

Walwyn made the point as he opened the 2026 legislative year, first extending New Year’s greetings to residents across the Virgin Islands and reaffirming his commitment to his Sixth District constituents.

“I want to wish them all the best for 2026 and to certainly give them the full reassurance that I will continue to work earnestly for them as they have reposed their confidence in me to be here,” he said in the January 13 sitting of the House of Assembly.

Turning to matters he says are affecting everyday life, Walwyn highlighted ongoing concerns in his district, including infrastructure shortcomings and waste management challenges. He stressed that raising such issues is part of his duty as an elected representative.

Responding to criticism about his tone in the House, the Opposition Leader said his approach is often misunderstood. “These issues aren’t being raised to embarrass anybody, to make anybody feel bad,” Walwyn told legislators. “I know sometimes when you talk, sometimes the government gets a little vex thinking you’re picking on them, but it’s not about that. It’s about trying to improve the country.”

He added that all elected officials, regardless of political affiliation, share a responsibility to clearly voice public concerns and pursue solutions. “All of us have a responsibility to represent our people and say what the issues are, and then we go and try to get them addressed,” he said.

Walwyn’s debating style continues to divide opinion within the society. Some critics argue that his persistence borders on disrespect toward Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley and fuels tensions in an already-fractured political space. Supporters, however, contend that he exemplifies the role of an effective Leader of the Opposition – holding the government accountable while explaining complex governance issues in terms ordinary residents can understand.

As the new legislative year progresses, Walwyn’s comments signal that sustained scrutiny of the government will continue, with the opposition leader maintaining that applying pressure is not about undermining leadership, but about improving the territory.

  1. Praying for you says:

Hon. Walwyn please continue to speak up for the people of the BVI. You are the only one who is doing this. It is because of you that even bother to listen to Legco. When you finish talk I lock off Mr radio to be honest. I don’t feel that the rest of them really care about us.

      • Well yes and no .. says:

Two things can be true at the same time.
And if you’re a supporter of Hon. Walwyn, there’s one simple question you have to be willing to ask: why?
Because by any reasonable measure, Hon. Walwyn should be in a leadership position. He’s bright, capable, and personable. Yet somehow, he’s been persistently caricatured as “power hungry.” And honestly, that label is more lazy than insightful.
Here’s the reality: “power hungry” is often just a sanitized way of saying ambitious, as if ambition is some kind of moral defect. News flash — ambition is the operating system of politics. There is no politician, bar none — not Lavity, not Ralph, not Cyril, not Fahie, not Wheatley — who gets anywhere near real influence without wanting it. You don’t stumble into power by accident. You pursue it. And most of the time, ambition is exactly what produces achievement.
So the “power hungry” argument doesn’t really hold up. It’s too easy. Too convenient. It doesn’t explain anything.
        So again: what gives?
My view is that Hon. Walwyn hasn’t made the right connections, and he may have been too uncompromising. Because politics, whether we like it or not, is not simply a meritocracy of intelligence and competence. It’s also a social system — one that requires teamwork, coalition-building, and collaboration.
And it’s obvious Hon. Walwyn is a serious man. He’s about business. He doesn’t seem like someone who has much patience for foolishness — and frankly, I can understand that. But leadership requires a certain tolerance: the ability to listen to an opinion even when you know it’s wrong, and then guide people toward the right decision without humiliating them.
Sometimes the job isn’t just to be correct — it’s to get other people to come along. To influence them. Even to let them believe the idea was theirs, because that’s how you get real buy-in and real commitment.
And that’s what makes it a shame.
Because I genuinely believe the man is sincere, and he has a lot to offer this Territory.

Ignorant statement. What the hell does it mean to be too hungry for power and too divisive? Here is your problem:

You are one of those people who label him as an “island man” who you simply don’t want to become the Premier of this country because of your ignorant xenophobia.

So what you and many of you have been trying to do is to paint this guy the way you have in some negative term. You cant deny his intellectual skill set, and his ability to drive a narative and work for the people, so you have to manufacture some bs.

Look, I have never spoken a word to this man in my life, but from my observation he stands taller than many of the people you would like to become Premier.

I personally would rather have a person in office who has a drive for the job than someone who gets the job and just goes thru the motion.

Some of you folks are so transparent. You just hate on people hoping you will dull their shine. It’s the same crab in a barrel crap that has been part of the fabric of this society for as long as I can recall.

Guess what, hate as you may, I think this guy is going to do well regardless of your too power hungy and divisive claim.

By the way, it’s stupid to be walking around calling people an “island man” when you live on an island yourself, one of the most tiny ones at that.

Get out of the way, or get rolled over. I am sick of you folks now.

  3. 6th Voter says:

Hon. Walwyn you are smart and was a very good Education Minister for 8 years. You may mean well but your quest to become Premier of the BVI at any cost has destroyed your political future. You can make all the excuses about being labelled as an island man or whatever else but your behavior and willingness to cut down any and everybody to get your own way is why you are in this position standing all alone. If you can humble yourself just enough to see the error in your ways then there may be hope but if not, then it was a good run while it lasted.

Are we watching the same situation? I have not seen Myron as power hungry. I see people who feel threatened by him labeling him as power hungry when they are the ones who actually are. Myron isn’t the one who labeled himself an island man. Haven’t you heard Skelton’s-Cline , wiggy, Ronnie and all the other bigotry people saying this constantly? How is Myron at fault for their warp thinking? How is Myron divisive? Is it because he refuse to go with the flow like a dead fish?
I don’t agree with your points except that he was a very good education minister. Competence doesn’t count for anything in the BVI unfortunately. In your post you were fine overlooking someone you called competent for some fictitious thought you created in your head or was led to believe by the real power hungry ones. Discernment is not in abundance with our people.

I think you are definitely overthinking this one and putting out hatred a little too far. When I read the article I hear Walwyn giving opening views for the new year and new house of assembly session. I don’t think he is changing anything and frankly I don’t think he should. Walwyn in my opinion is most outstanding of all the members. Sorry if you dislike him for whatever reason.
