Illegal immigrants captured last week escape

Hotel Castle Maria

Three of the seven illegal immigrants detained at Great Thatch last week have escaped the custody of immigration officers.

Highly placed sources told our news centre the detainees were being housed at the Immigration Detention Center at Hotel Castle Maria.

BVI News understands that over the weekend, security officers discovered the three men missing and called the police.

It is further understood that the men had pried open a metal door that leads to the ground floor and made their escape.

Last Friday the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) reported that seven illegal immigrants were captured on Great Thatch after notification from the US Coast Guard of a suspicious vessel in BVI waters.

Six nationals of Cuba and one national of St. Kitts and Nevis were detained including a nine-month-old infant.

The 50’ monohull sailboat, believed to be the vessel that transported the seven, was recovered in waters nearby.

It should be clear to everyone that this so called Immigration Detention Center at Castle Maria is wholly inadequate for the purpose of detaining so called illegal immigrants.

It comes as no surprise that some of these detainees made their escape by way of the balcony if you understand the layout of the hotel.

In order to ensure detainees do not escape it will require security at the front doors as well as security overseeing the balconies 24/7 which may not be practical or financially feasible.

If I were a detainee there, (Thank God I don’t have to be in their positions), I certainly would make a run for it if the opportunity arose. A run to where I don’t know, but a run somewhere. Who want’s to be locked up?

At any rate, escaping detainees is a recurring issue. Others will do the same if nothing changes soon, and we will be reading about those in the future.

The powers that be needs to address the security issue at the hotel, and simultaneously work on finding a more secure facility to house detainees.

One never knows what some desperate detainee may do. The public needs to be protected against any potential harm from an escaped detainee.

In short, Immigration and by extension, the government needs to do better.

This is beyond funny now. Sorry folks, this place is beyond third world. Who detain illegals in a hotel. No joke, the BVI is a laughing stock and the butt of many jokes. On a serious note, is it going to take one of those illegals that escape the hotel to kill someone? You all need to seriously get your s**t together.

  10. Let them go says:

Let’s face it none of them want to be in the BVI, and they want to get to the US where, at least the Cubans, will be accepted with open arms if they can get ashore. Why no let them go with a small boat at Sopers Hole.

  11. well saw says:

CAN I APPLY FOR THE SECURITY CONTRACT..

  16. Lmfaoooooo says:

I’m sorry to laugh but at this point I feel like the authorities should just allow the people to go on their merry way, because I really don’t see the point in detaining them if they can easily escape from this so-called Immigration Detention Center.

    This is beyond ridiculous now.

  17. Smh says:

Real talk tho… who guarding these people? Hard to believe y’all actually paying somebody/multiple persons to make sure these people don’t escape. It’s to the point now where you can joke about them escaping from before it even happen.

  18. It's Obvious says:

They’re letting them escape on purpose, knowing they’ll leave BVI and go to the US, because they don’t want to expend the time or cost to deal with them.

  19. Eagle says:

Whatever contract Government have with these people need to be cancelled effective immediately. The same nonsense every time.

  20. BVI Future says:

Why keep utilizing the same hotel and the same security guards?

  21. LMAO says:

And what exactly the MALL COPS they have that is suppose to be handling security doing?. LMAO, what is a MALL COP SUPPOSE TO DO WITH JUST A NIGHTSTICK AKA A BATON. LMAO HOUSING ILLEGALS IN A HOTEL. NOTHING IN THIS PLACE CEASE TO AMAZE ME ANYMORE. IS THE BVI A REAL PLACE OR WHAT?

  22. Redstorm says:

Insanity. I don’t know when they will realize that it not funny anymore. Seriously! When the first person flee the hotels, both the one in town and the one in macnamara,it should have send a message to the powers that be it was not a good idea. So, Honorable Governor , Premier, whoever is in charged, please liaison with those countries Foreign Affairs minister and let them send a ticket so they can return home.

It’s expensive to keep illegal people in your country, get them to tell you where they from, and send them out immediately. Do not keep them! I know some of those countries can give a hard time on information, but get your best people to speak with them.

  25. GTFOH says:

At this point, I’m sure that the illegal immigrants deliberately get caught for a free and quick ride to town, a free meal and bath then they wait patiently to make an easy escape from these bumbling buffoons that we call security guards.

  26. Chicken likin says:

The inability to detain these illegals with unknown identities and backgrounds exposes the people of the VI to any and all kind of danger.
    Lawd fada.

No room in a prison fill to capacity with those same and their progeny that we imported and installed to “build up” when in fact it was to secure votes and cement corruption.

Worse yet,Not a solution in sight or in earshot.

  27. WW3 says:
