I’m satisfied with what I’ve done to fight crime

Governor Rankin

With only a few weeks left in his tenure, Governor John Rankin has asserted that he has done everything in his power to improve crime fighting efforts in the territory, adding that the remaining actions should be taken by elected leaders.

“In terms of my areas of responsibility, I am doing things, I’m delivering that financial, training and physical support for the police to make their moves effective. The Police Act legislation is for the House of Assembly.I do not have legislative powers and it’s for the House of Assembly to act in that area,” Governor Rankin said.

The Governor also reiterated his call for the wider community to support the police and the government in fighting crime. He said the churches, community leaders and other societal organisations need to speak against crime and violence.

“In terms of community support, I need others to speak up — church leaders, community leaders, the Christian council — helping us to encourage the community to work with the police. So there are things to be done, I’m doing them in my area and I need others to act to make the police more effective in preventing crime,” Governor Rankin said.

The rise in crime and the factors that are leading to it became a trending topic this year amid spikes in several criminal activities, including shootings, stabbings and burglaries.

Many believe the uptick is due to harsh economic conditions people are experiencing. While the police say this is a factor, they say much of the criminal activity is linked to the illicit drug trade, which has enticed many young people in the territory who are using it as a way to gain quick cash and other ill-gotten gains.

Goodbye Gov, you were as feckless as the others you followed. Sat there, took in your pay cheque, padded your cozy pension, and allowed those that the people voted in to fleece the public purse with your full knowledge and blessings.

Don’t expect the next cat who replaces you to be any different!

All bark no bite, no repercussions from failing to meet COI deadlines (what a 20million waste of time that was!). Demands to address 2500 residency applications ignored leaving the labour department undermanned and unable to cope. Economic decline, increase in crime. Very sad
