Incinerator should be back online soon

The incinerator/waste facility at Pockwood Pond on Tortola.

Efforts are underway to get the incinerator at Pockwood Pond back online after more than a year of inactivity.

That’s the commitment given by Director of the Waste Management Department, Marcus Solomon, who visited the plant’s manufacturer Consutech Systems LLC in Richmond Virginia, United States earlier this month.

“It (the trip) allowed us to verify the status of some outstanding contract agreements, which puts us in a better place for a positive outcome to replace the spare parts necessary to have the incinerator functional by the end of the year,” Solomon said.

The director stated that a number of measures were initiated to allow for improved compliance in the contractual arrangement.

“We have set guidelines for shipping, set new timelines, implemented a process that accounts for progress and delays as well as implementing penalties which include termination of the said contracts,” he explained.

The director added: “We are hoping that this trip has reinforced the relationship between both parties and that we both can continue to benefit from a symbiotic relationship.”

The incinerator has been offline since February 2022. The public is being reminded to continue doing their part to assist the department by diverting as much waste from Pockwood Pond where possible. Persons are asked to rinse and separate plastic, glass and aluminum household waste and utilise the territory’s, “we eecycle” programme.

The Pockwood Pond incinerator — which helps with processing garbage — continues to be a topical issue as solid waste management becomes a major problem whenever it breaks down.

In addition to the incinerator, residents continue to deal with the effects of occasional fires and fumes which emanate from the dump site, and which pose serious health risks, especially those with preexisting health conditions.

So money is the reason we havent got the parts. Cant we do anything right?

  8. LOL says:

We so far behind, we need about 3 incinerators now with the amount of trash produced daily. The BVI is just a fucking sad place. We are bragging about a direct flight with 60 seats, new high school built like a prison with no ventilation admin complex taking 7yrs to repair, incinerator down for years and now it will be back online ‘soon’ but already outdated and won’t serve much of a purpose as it cannot handle the daily trash loads.

  9. More information needed says:

We deserve better than this. The smoke is real and you can’t be bothered to disclose the specifics of the improvements made and the precise timelines?

So we have been lied to all along? Sounds to me as though the parts were not sent because we did not honor agreements i.e. paid fees? BVI news you guys need to do real journalistic work and ASK THESE QUESTIONS, not just rewrite GIS and Government reporting.

  11. What!!!! says:

No sense at all fixing it without a scrubber or it will be the same smoke put out just from a different source.

  12. WEW says:

Wouldn’t be out of service had they kept the operation area clean so it wouldn’t catch on fire and burn up the controls.

To land lord only knows where.
But where are the moutains of cash?

  17. Curious says:

So how much money did he give these people on this trip. All I heard so far is that we are paying for parts which never arrive. If I remember correctly last time we paid $ 400,000.00. So what value has been delivered up to date? Just curious.

  18. Really says:

Natures little Secret should find a more environmentally sustainable method to deal with this problem.
