Junior Minister presents 700+ gifts to local educators for World Teacher’s Day

Teachers across the territory recently received more than 700 donated gifts from Territorial At-Large Representative, Sharie de Castro.

The first-term legislator said she rolled out the initiative in honour and appreciation of the United Nations World Teacher’s Day on October 5.

The former educator said it was only fitting to reward the dedicated teachers in the territory for their contribution to the future development of the British Virgin Islands and said she simply could not let the day pass without giving back.

“I know I hold the title of Honourable. But I came into contact with so many honourable men and women who go above and beyond the call of duty every single day, to impact the lives of our children. Our future in the BVI is brighter because of them. As a teacher at heart, I just wanted to give this simple but special token of appreciation to all of you,” she said.

De Castro who is also the Junior Minister for Trade further said: “I saw teachers who have taught me, teachers who I taught alongside and teachers who I have never met. Yet, it was evident that there was one thing that we all had in common — the desire to make a difference.”

The annual event which first began on October 5, 1966, celebrates the anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

Among other things, the organisation dictates the rights and responsibilities of teachers along with the international standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions.

Walwyn wasted $200,000 each year. That was not necessary. Put the money in teachers’ pockets if you want to spend that kind of money. I am sure each teacher could use a nice $285 Christmas bonus as a thank you. And who catered Walwyn’s function? Who catered it? Enquiring minds want to know!

Which VIP crony benefited from this Jr Minister purchasing 700 gifts and gift wrap or gift tie or whatever the pluck you want to call it? Trust me this is all just a show. This Minister should tell us what other ways she is going to boost the territory’s economy and not be here with no apple cider when the country needs a hole lot more boosting! Furthermore is she with the Ministry of Education as well?
