JVD suffers island-wide power outage

Jost Van Dyke

Residents of Jost Van Dyke were thrown into darkness last evening after the island suffered a total power outage.

Officials at the BVI Electricity Corporation reported that the island’s generator shut down at approximately 5:59 pm and said investigations were underway.

In a subsequent update, the BVIEC stated: “The team travelled to Jost Van Dyke and found greater issues with the generator. Further troubleshooting is needed in order to determine the root cause of the failure.”

The power company said there was little that their team could do at the time since the unit required further diagnostic testing.

The BVIEC promised to have power restored to Jost Van Dyke as soon as possible and apologised for the inconvenience caused.

Just a day earlier, power was disrupted in some parts of the northwestern end of Tortola early in the morning due to a fallen tree on a power line near the Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church.

The incident caused the Long Bush West Feeder to trip, but power was restored sometime around 10am, officials indicated.

Affected areas included George’s Hollow, Chalwell Estate, Threadfall, Windy Hill, Ballast Bay, Cane Garden Bay, Luck Hill, and a part of Brewers Bay.
