PRESS RELEASE: The Ministry of Communications and Works is reminding the public to practice safety on the roads.

Motorists have been spotted on occasion operating dangerously on public roadways, which poses an inherent danger to other users. Heavy equipment and other trucking operators are reminded to keep loads covered while being transported.

Vehicles overladen with debris that could fall onto the roadway represent an unsafe practice that is illegal when transporting materials and debris.

The Litter (Abatement) Act. (Cap.182) of The Laws of The Virgin Islands, section 3(1), d and f state: No person shall, (d) transport litter in a manner that it is scattered or is likely to be scattered in a public place while it is being transported. It continues that no person shall, (f) discharge any litter from a moving or stationary vehicle.

Litter is defined in The Laws of The Virgin Islands as any matter or material disposed of or discarded in a place where its presence is undesirable or is likely to be injurious to health.

Section 8(1) advises that any person who contravenes (conflicts with) section 3(1) is guilty of an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine and in default, imprisonment.

The Ministry of Communications and Works continues to endeavour to provide a public road network that facilitates the safe and efficient flow of traffic throughout the territory and encourages the continued diligence and support of motorists and pedestrians in keeping the BVI Clean and refrain from littering.
