Kyron McMaster honoured with OBE at Buckingham Palace
Local Olympian Kyron McMaster has been conferred the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Princess Royal during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
The honour was bestowed on Thursday, November 28.
In a statement, McMaster expressed his gratitude, saying, “It feels good to be recognised by the British Empire for my due diligence in sports and the British Virgin Islands.” He added that he does not take the honour lightly and aspires to achieve even greater accomplishments, ultimately working toward the title of Sir Kyron McMaster.
The OBE is typically awarded for exceptional contributions to communities, professional achievements, and philanthropy.
McMaster’s athletic career has been filled with historic milestones. He recently concluded his second Olympic journey, finishing fifth in the 400m hurdles final at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a season-best time of 47.79 seconds. The event took place on August 9 at the Stade de France, with 80,000 spectators in attendance and fervent support from fans back home.
At just 21 years old, McMaster made history by winning the Virgin Islands’ first-ever Commonwealth Games medal, capturing gold in the men’s 400m hurdles at the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Australia. He went on to win a second Commonwealth gold medal and a World Championship silver medal.

Congratulations. Very well deserved.
Not sure Natalio will be so happy as surely this is just seen as another symbol of the Colonial masters that are suppressing us and who we are suppossed to despise.
From the rest of us (as Natalial would normally say speaking for the people of the VI) Well done.
