‘Let’s Teach VI’ launched to fill teacher shortage
Following through on her promise to ramp up efforts against teacher shortage, Education Minister Sharie de Castro has announced the launch of the ‘Let’s Teach VI’ initiative, designed to recruit untrained young people for vacant teaching posts across the territory.
De Castro said the ‘Let’s Teach VI’ initiative offers two pathways in teaching — a teacher trainee or a teacher recruit.
The Teacher Trainee Programme targets recent high school graduates by offering a direct pathway into the teaching profession through on-the-job training, mentorship and academic enrichment. Minister de Castro said these persons will be assigned to a classroom to work alongside a senior teacher.
The Teacher Recruit Programme is intended to attract college graduates from every academic major, occupation, and background into the teaching profession. These persons will be required to teach in schools for a minimum of two years.
The Education Ministry will require Teacher Trainees and Teacher Recruits to enrol at the H Lavity Stoutt Community College’s Institute of Education to become qualified teachers.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dr Marcia Potter said interested persons must complete the application form at https://shorturl.at/fuyK0 to be considered for the programme.
Dr Potter said: “The Ministry of Education will review applications and inform individuals if they have progressed to the interview stage. Upon completion of the process, applicants will receive an update on the status of their application.”
Persons requiring additional information may email [email protected] or call 468-2757.
According to Minister de Castro, the ‘Let’s Teach VI” initiative is a crucial step in building a pool of educators locally, as the territory seeks to attract talented individuals who are passionate about teaching and making a positive impact on the lives of students.
Recently, the Education Minister said the ‘Let’s Teach VI” initiative isn’t new to the BVI, adding that there was a similar programme in the community many years ago. She said some senior educators in local schools started their careers as part of that programme.

Our poor chirren.
So now we paying for two teachers per classroom rather than paying the real teachers a proper salary. Something wrong with this place
I guess they are training the recent graduates and when they are fully trained there will be no need for foreign teachers here. that’s one way to look at it.
use them same trainee teachers to give the kids afternoon lessons especially in Math and English. Classes should be in every district
Let me get this straight. There is a teacher shortage in our schools, so we will get graduates from these same schools (or school) and stick them in the classrooms as the new teachers. But at the same time send them to HLSCC for education; and training.
What we end up with is a continuous cycle of mediocrity, but at least we ensure that our students are taught by someone frum hair. Because in the BVI that is always the most important thing.
The future is certainly bright…
They doing everything but paying teachers better salary.
Give these young people who are interested in teaching, scholarships to go to teacher training colleges. You need to be properly trained to do the job.
Would we be comfortable having a recent high school graduate standing alongside a lawyer in court or a doctor in surgery?
