Local CARIFTA athletes receive heroes’ welcome
The BVI Junior athletes who participated in the 2024 CARIFTA Games in Grenada returned home to a warm welcome at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on April 2.
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, Sports Minister Sharie de Castro, as well as family members and supporters, lauded the athletes for representing the territory and “leaving it all” on the track.
Though the BVI gained only one medal from Tiondre Frett who earned a bronze in the Boys Under-17 200m — many of the athletes achieved personal bests and set national records.
The yearly CARIFTA Games is the premier event for junior track and field stars of the Caribbean. The 2024 staging took place between 30 March and 1 April, 2024 at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium in St George’s, Grenada.
In the meantime, the CARIFTA Games were again dominated by the Jamaicans, who swept a total of 84 medals. The Bahamas with 35 medals, placed second while Trinidad and Tobago with 27 medals, placed third. Guyana with eight medals and the USVI with three medals placed fourth and fifth.

Congratulations to each and everyone of you for qualifying and attending the CARIFTA Games to represent us. You may not have medalled, but you learned somethings that you can use to prepare for next year. So regroup; get out there on that track everyday and work on those times, technique, mind set. GO GET IT! Let’s get fired up. We got medals to win next year.
To Tiondre, congratulations on your Bronze Medal in the 200m. Back to training; we got silver or gold to win next year. GO GET IT!
