Local trio launches books, hopes to reignite reading in BVI

Local author Walter Barrett is hoping to reignite reading among residents now that three new devotional books have become available locally.

Barrett along with Dr Albert Thompkins and Joshua Edwards launched their latest work at Save the Seed Energy Centre Thursday evening.

“The first thing is, we are hoping that people will start to read because people don’t read. We want to get people back to reading because reading is power, we learn a lot,” Barrett told BVI News following the event.

Barrett and his book, Paul.

He said readers of his new book titled ‘Paul’ will find tools that can jumpstart “some little seed that is inside their mind, how to water it, and turn it into a tree”.

“These books are taking people through a process that could take them to a place that they could write a book, start their business or leave that job that they are fed up of and get the job that they are supposed to be in.”

The Restorative Justice Officer at Her Majesty’s Prison said his 139-page book speaks to the apostle’s life.

“The reality is Paul was a human being who went through a lot of struggles … he was a man just like us. So I looked at some of the issues that he had, and I tried to exploit the proverbial thorn in his side that we have heard about for so many years. And, I just hope that people appreciate the fact that God doesn’t change our passion or take it away from us; he just re-directs it in the direction in the place that he wants it to be.”

The Potter’s Power

Dr Albert Thompkins who penned the 102-page book entitled – The Potter’s Power – explained that it is an introductory guide to understanding one’s destiny.

“I was inspired to write the book because at a point in my life I didn’t know what God called me to be or called me to do. But once I submitted to the fact that he is the potter and I am the clay, it brought clarity and peace so that I can actually function in life and be a productive citizen,” he said.

He said on that premise, he wanted others to allow God to be the master of their destiny.

Dr Thompkins is from Anegada but lived for the greater part of his life in the US.

Arise & Shine

In the meantime, Transformation Church International Elder Joshua Edwards’ 127-page book – Arise & Shine – attempts to convince readers that they could jumpstart their blessings within a month.

“People don’t realise that devotion is very necessary. This is what this book is all about. It will also share things that will hinder you from being blessed and things that will help you to be blessed,” Edwards said.
