More than two decades of service to community and tourism has landed Virgin Islander Lynette Harrigan on His Majesty King Charles III’s 2023 New Year’s Honours List.

Harrigan, the Niche Marketing & Tourism Liaison Manager at the BVI Tourist Board (BVITB), was bestowed with the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), with notable recognition of her contributions to international travel during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A media release from the BVITB noted that Harrigan helped to build the reputation of the BVI as a top destination for romance, sailing, dive adventure, luxury and meetings and incentives travel.

“Her work has helped to diversify the tourism mix and create more business during the traditional tourism off-season,” the Tourist Board stated.

Tourism Director Clive McCoy described Harrigan as an invaluable asset to the Tourist Board who “always answers the call in times of crisis”.

“She provided exceptional service to both our visitors and residents travelling to and from the BVI during the COVID-19 pandemic. She continues to play a pivotal role as the Board’s Tourism Liaison to the BVI Government. Congratulations to Lynette, as she is truly deserving of this prestigious award,” McCoy stated.

Governor John Rankin also had high praises for the territory’s newest MBE awardee. He said Lynette is “a great representative for the BVI”.

I agree she deserves it as most times during covid she had to violate the policies of the day to help people in need.

  3. question says:

Has anyone ever questions why the travel portal was not working as it should have been working, why it was not rectified and why Ms Harrigan was the only person people needed to contact? Who was responsible for the dysfunction? Who was or was not held accountable. We live in a society where we give the teller a trophy for handing us our funds when we make a bank withdrawal. System not working and yahooo, one person to the rescue to help all of us enter the territory while we at MIA panicking. You-all better think for yourself and stop being bamboozled

  4. TO Hmmm says:

So, she can violate policy once she is doing it for the right reasons and be honored while others are ridiculed by the Governor and his COI and investigated and arrested when it is helping who are not their fans. Total hypocrisy.

  5. @ question says:

THANK YOU!!! It seems like we have lost our minds in this little place. We are rewarding people for failed systems. Kudos to Ms. Harrigan for her work but was it necessary for her to be manually handling all that stuff at the time? Total incompetence led to this situation that is now being rewarded. Good example to our young people who we pretend to care about so much.

  6. thanks says:

this needed to be addressed. I agree with you.to have a approval system to come in the BVI during the time of restriction and 1 person alone can make it happen. systems in this place do not either function properly or they are not allowed to function. To get any thing do in BVI system is who you know and who know you, else dog eat your supper. It is kinda weird to be acknowledging some people in a pandemic. There are people who lost their lives and risked their lives and the lives of their families during the most uncertain of times of covid, but we pick out the who is who and hand out MBE. gimmi a break. absurd and laughable. If it was her job, then she received a salary. If it was not her job, then whose job was it and why was she allowed to do a job not hers. Why did the system not work.

Where is the King’s recognition for Ms. Alexander? Oh she isn’t a BH? I thought both of them were the ones assisting people during that distressing time? Why single out one to be awarded but not the other? Should we forward the FB posts thanking Ms. Alexander to HM The King too?

  13. Rubber Duck says:

    Absolutely deserved.

The government spent an alleged $6 million on a system that never worked. Instead it created chaos. Lynette Harrigan cut through the chaos and kept the system going. Exemplary.
