Males outnumber females in new HIV cases locally

Amid the ongoing discussions about the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the community, statistics from the Health Ministry show that in the last five years, slightly more males contracted the virus than females.

Overall, close to 50 people are being treated for HIV in the local healthcare system.

According to the figures from the Health Ministry, there have been 29 new cases of HIV between 2019 and 2023 — 12 new diagnoses among females and 17 among males.

The Health Ministry said HIV was identified in persons between the ages of 25 and 84, with the majority being in the 25-70 age group. Despite the uptick in numbers, Chief Nursing Officer Jascinth Hannibal said a vast majority of people living with HIV have the virus under control.

“A large proportion of the persons that receive treatment in the public sector have achieved a suppressed viral load which makes it less possible to transmit HIV,” Hannibal said.

She also said the HIV numbers in the territory may be greater as there are people who may seek treatment overseas and through the private sector.

“There are also some persons who are last to follow up since Hurricane Irma and COVID-19 when persons were displaced,” Hannibal added.

She said everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care. However, people with accelerated risk factors should get tested more often.

This group includes men who have sex with men, sex workers, persons who have more than one sexual partner, or persons who have sex with any of these groups.

For new diagnoses, Hannibal stated that there is a range of medications available for the treatment of HIV locally and once tested positive, a person can commence treatment immediately leading to better outcomes.

“Treatment can be as simple as taking one pill a day. Consistent treatment can lead to viral suppression which reduces the risk of HIV transmission,” Hannibal shared.

I would agree the males in the Territory is the majority carriers of the HIV virus and cases. I know of a male that I heard said that after having sex in the raw, just pour some alcohol on the penis and that will stop the spread of the HIV virus. Utter ignorance and stupidity. You women need to stop laying up and sleeping with the men in the BVI IN THE RAW.

  10. Act Before it is To Late. says:

The island is to small to obserbe such harzadous sexualy tramsmitted diseases, allof which stem from open immingation regulations.

The time has come to strenghten border regulations to include mandatory verfication intrusions of allwanting to enter the territory on a long erm basis.

If the governing political body does not protect its people, who is tasked to do so? the prostitutes, drug runners, illegals and or casual visitor?

The government must act now before it is too late.
