Xiomara ‘Gia’ Malone is the latest local athlete to earn a spot on the BVI national team that will compete at this year’s CARIFTA Games.
Malone leapt to a distance of 1.63 metres in the women’s High Jump while participating in the Deltona Invitational sporting event held in Florida recently.
Her jump surpasses the BVI’s CARIFTA Games qualifying standard of 1.55 metres.
The BVI Athletics Association set national qualifying standards so local athletes who compete in international events can do well. The CARIFTA Games does not set qualifying standards for countries to participate.
Meanwhile, other local qualifiers are strongman Djimon Gumbs, Javelin thrower Akira Phillip, 200-metre sprinter Beyonce Defreitas, quarter-miler Akrisa Eristee, and long-jumper Arianna Hayde.
This year’s CARIFTA Games will be held from March 30 to April 2 in The Bahamas.
