Though he won’t get to see the next step in the Virgin Islands’ political advancement, residents are hailing the late Carvin Malone as a true champion of the Virgin Islands, who has always fought for greater autonomy for the territory.

Malone reportedly suffered a stroke on January 14 and was taken to the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital, where he later passed away.

The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) said Malone served as their President from 1999 to 2016, leaving an indelible mark on our political landscape.

“His commitment extended beyond his presidency. After his success at the polls in 2019, he assumed the role of Minister for Health and Social Development from 2019 to 2022, tirelessly working for the betterment of these Virgin Islands.”

VIP chairman Dr Natalio Wheatley, expressed profound sadness and urged the community to keep the entire family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

“Carvin was the one who recruited me into the VIP, I would not be here if it were not for him,” Premier Wheatley said in an interview with ZBVI radio.

“The last conversation we had was related to an event we are planning to help advance our fight towards self determination and I am going to honour his memory by continuing this fight.”

On social media, family and friends left their own tributes — remembering Malone as a vibrant optimist who always cared for the wellbeing of those around him.

“Hon. Carvin Malone, when I started this business venture, you gave your support and I remember you telling me how proud you were of me. I remember one conversation where at times I thought that you were more excited about it than me, but that’s the kind of person you were. R.I.P, lion brother,” one user said.

“Hon. Carvin Malone, last Sunday you and your family was with us having an awesome time. You dance, you laughed, we took pictures. You were full of life. This news really hit my husband and I HARD. NOT GOIN’ LIE,” another person wrote.

“This morning, I received the heartbreaking news of the passing of Hon. Carvin Malone, a dedicated leader, loving family man, and cherished friend. It is difficult to put into words the depth of sorrow I feel at his loss. Hon. Malone was a man of vision, a strategist, and purpose. His absence leaves a profound void, particularly during this challenging time for our territory. Despite the shock and pain of this loss, we must remain resolute. Let us honour his legacy and take comfort in the hope that his dedication has inspired others to continue the important work for the people of the Virgin Islands,” another Facebook user said.

Comfort is for the living, not the dead. The dead knows nothing. You ever attend a funeral and heard a set of bad things about the worst of US humans, NO

Stress kills. Few could have not become stricken with the extreme ridducule the gentleman was subjected to, and the subsequent deep severe stress it created internally..Pople’s attitude and words more than likely were responsible for his demise.

I am ashamed and scared. All over town, folks are paying glowing tribute to Malone. Which Malone? Calvin? Cant beleive this. Is this not the same Malone we thrashed at the slightest opportunity? We rubished everything he did or said during the covid crises. If you are angry over what I said,
wait a moment and check BVI News old files and read the comments on any news item about Malone. Whaoh!!! what a generation. The bashing partly accounted for his defeat at the last election. We killed Malone emotionally before stroke did the final blow. Thats exactly the same way, we are after Dr Wheatley. I see people address him as if he never attended primary school.
