UPDATE: Man’s body found among rocks on VG

A body believed to be the man who went missing on Virgin Gorda has been found.
His body was found washed up on rocks late Friday afternoon, BVI News understands.
Authorities have withheld the man’s name, and details of the incident are still sketchy.

A man has gone missing after a visit to The Baths on Virgin Gorda.
BVI News understands that he went missing early Friday afternoon, March 2.
Sources told our news centre he was aboard a charter yacht before he disappeared.
A team from Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) is currently searching for the man.
When contacted, VISAR confirmed the report but declined to give any further details.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Strange. The water was smooth as silk today. Of course, there’s an undertow. Could have been a heart attack too. Rest in Peace
Red flag was flying at the baths. Really sorry for the outcome but people must be aware of the dangerous environment and follow the flags
Very sad… Not smooth at the baths, that’s why they had red flags flying from the morning.
Was at the baths up to 4 pm today and water was smooth.. flag was put up in anticipation of the high wind and rough seas later tonight. Was this man on this boat alone? For the life of me I can’t understand why the buddy system is not used when persons are swimming in to the beach. We don’t know the details though. If he was found on the rocks how did he get there? Heard his mask, snorkel and fins were found on the beach. Weird

Smooth water but big swell can dash on the rocks
Just because the water ‘smooth’ does not mean the beach conditions are safe, waves can still be present, the shore breaking waves and rip currents dangerous.
Large flag pole not operating today at baths, only small flag on beach. I guess you may have to be aware and look for flags.
The flag at both the top and bottom are always up. The storm DID NOT affect he flag pole at the beach at the Baths. Its the SAME flag pole that’s been there for years. The flagpole at the top where you enter The Baths from the landside has been damaged and not repaired since the storm. An alternate shorter flag pole is being used at the top. It is operational just that is it not as tall
The water was smooth at the Baths on Friday 2 March because the wind was offshore or from the southeast veering to south all day. The red flag was flown because of the 1-2m long period north swell that arrived in BVI waters late Wed. 1 March. The larger waves are nearly invisible to swimmers/snorkelers at the Baths until the waves cross into shallow water, break on the rocks and create strong currents & backwash between the rocks. This particular long period swell shows the larger waves arriving every 15 to 20 minutes. The smooth or calm water at the Baths on Friday in only an ‘artificial calm’ between the large waves of this long period north swell that will be affecting BVI waters for the next 7 days.
The baths and a few other beaches need lifeguards, the evidence is clear, very sad for the family and friends…
But actually not only The Baths but other beaches also need lifeguards but this government doesn’t think they are important so there are only 2 or 3 at the moment. We need way more and they need to be properly trained and paid otherwise they will move away once they have a better offer from another place…
We know that there is an undertow at The Baths AS WELL as at many other beaches in the BVI
Wondering if there have been more drownings since they put up the dinghy lines and people have to swim in to get to the Bath entrance and Devils Bay?

The family and friends of Ralph Pool of Lake Tahoe, NV, who lost his life swimming at The Baths March 2 are saddened and still processing the loss of our beloved companion. We are very grateful to the courtesy of Lars and the other professionals of VISAR and the BVIPD. Your able assistance and kind expressions of condolences were very much appreciated. We look forward to the resurrection and seeing him again.
