Mather bemoans “power hungry” attitude of elected reps

Opposition legislator and Deputy Speaker Stacy ‘Buddha’ Mather.

Territorial At-Large Representative Stacy “Budda” Mather has stated that all elected leaders are concerned about holding higher positions in government, adding that this attitude is preventing them from working together for the good of the nation.

In 2023, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley expressed similar sentiments about the “power-hungry” attitude of legislators. At that time, the leader stated that most members of the Opposition wanted to undermine his government because they wanted the seat of Premier and other positions in government.

On a recent episode of the Cut Deep talk show, Mather agreed with Premier Wheatley but said the “power hungry” attitude is displayed by all legislators.

“When the Premier made that statement on Tola Radio, he called [the names of] all the members of the Opposition and said they want to be Premier. But to me, that’s the entire view within the House of Assembly. Everyone is thinking of when their day will come to sit in the chair and to me, I’m worried that we might not have the chair,” Mather told Cut Deep host Cindy Rosan.

Mather also said when he was first elected in 2023, he naively thought he could share his suggestions with all members regardless of the side of the House of Assembly on which they sit. But he said he quickly learned that his colleagues were more concerned with whether he wanted to dethrone them.

“When I looked at their faces, I realised persons were more concerned about, ‘can I trust you? Are you positioning yourself to take my seat? Are you trying to make me look bad?'” Mather stated frankly. “At one point, I made a statement at a press conference and I got a call from a colleague on the opposite side (government) who told me never to say that again. I had to let the person know I don’t work for you. If you’re calling to tell me what to do, don’t pick up the phone ’cause I don’t work for you.”

The first-time legislator has been calling for unity among elected leaders regardless of the political divide. But he said the current government has not made any move towards partnering with Opposition members, despite numerous invitations. There is no indication that the government would be willing to work together on the level Mather is suggesting.

According to the Premier, he is willing to work with the Opposition in the current roles they hold in the House of Assembly.

The power hungry ones done gave away tax payers monies for: fake farmers and fishermen, vehicle repairs, cruises, credit card payments, buy vehicles, fake security companies, trips at tax payers expense and the list goes on and on! The wigless one abused his authority costing tax payers hundreds of thousands if not more on frivolous lawsuits and other things.

Scary Shary has gone to hide under a rock and is utterly useless! Her own colleagues saw the same things about her lack of integrity and leadership. Watching HOA yesterday, the member from the 4th could be clearly seen laughing at rolling eyes at the premiers responses! What the heck going on?!? Mather built his professional career outside of government- what accomplishments have the MINISTERS in power now achieved?

Crickets – waiting for piggy wiggy pseudo names to pop up defending his toddler party government and the BS inexperienced players they fielding!

I met him once and I found him out almost instantly. His lips are loose and he bad mouths other people. I don’t like people like that. Sorry.

  17. Correct says:

Mr. Mather states the obvious that all 13 members of the HOA want to be Premier for some time during their political careers. The only clear solution is abolish the entire Westminster form of government and political parties.

A legislative body only needs 5 elected members. One from each of the 4 main islands and a Chief Minister voted by ALL the eligible voters in the BVI. On Polling Day each voter casts 2 votes: 1 for Chief Minister and 1 for the member who lives full time on that voter’s island. There are no political parties, no opposition, no Speaker, no restrictive agendas, etc. 5 committed persons working together to build a better BVI is the solution NOT 13 wannabe Premiers.
